He kicked 12.
But after the game he was kicking himself.
Frankston Dolphins playing-coach Rich Mathers also booted eight behinds and was left wanting more.
He felt he and his team missed a golden opportunity to put a mountainous goal tally on the board against Doveton Eagles on Saturday.
As it was the Frankston Dolphins piled on 37.32 (254) to the hapless Eagles’ 4.3 (27).
The scoreboard was ticking over at a rapid rate at Overport Park as the unbeaten Dolphins enhanced their reputation as the team to beat for the flag in SFNL Division 4.
“We scored 12.7 in the second quarter,” Mathers said.
“Personally I kicked 5.5 in that quarter. I let a few go which is a shame.
“If you have 69 shots you’ve got to kick at least 65 percent of them as goals. That’s the only frustrating part.”
But Mathers said there was a lot to like about the win, especially the dynamic performances of former Frankston YCW player Nick Christoforou, who kicked five goals as a midfielder-forward, and ruckman Jack Waller.
“Nick was super clean,” he said.
“And Jacky in the ruck, he was just huge, he dominated the clearance battle for us. He played a great game.”
Former Karingal captain Andy Mathers had a heap of the footy as well and Nathanael Furlong continued his impressive form, while forward Josh Kerrigan kicked three goals before being injured.
The Dolphins kicked 7.10 to 1.0 in the opening quarter and led by an eye-popping 129-points at half-time. There was another seven goals in the third term and 11 in the final quarter as Frankston maintained the pressure.
Most of all, Mathers was thrilled it was the Dolphins’ first four-quarter performance of the season.
“So we were stoked,” he said,
Before the season, the Frankston Dolphins recruited strongly and smartly, with many ex-juniors returning to Overport Park as one-point players.
“It’s a real luxury because it’s just been a breeding ground for footy talent down there,” Mathers said.
“Now that we’re a senior club we really want to build the relationship between the junior club and senior club so we can make it sustainable.
“We’ve been able to bring a few boys home so to speak and they’ve been huge.
“And just a really solid pre season where numbers have been really good and we’ve got kilometres in the legs and we see it every week now with how well we go in red time at the end of quarters and in second halves we’re really strong.’’
Mathers said the Dolphins’ big test would come on May 28 when they host second-placed Hallam (5-1).
