Leigh Poholke says he’s looking forward to a fresh start in a new league next season.
The Sorrento champion, who kicked 675 goals in 198 games with the Sharks, has confirmed he’ll join a Gippsland league club in 2025 — as player-coach.
His brother, ex-AFL Crow Myles, will accompany him.
The club in question is yet to announce the Poholke signings, but will do so in the coming weeks.
Poholke, 32, said the lure of winning a premiership had piqued his excitement levels.
He also revealed he interviewed for the Hastings coaching job last week but declined, despite being impressed with the Blues, who he described as an “outstanding club”.
“I was really impressed with Hastings and the things they’re doing to turn that club around,” he said.
“They have the right morals and a football club-first mentality. They weren’t willing to sell their soul, they weren’t willing to give everything up to have success now. They wanted to go about it the right way and build in the right way.”
He said Hastings’ football department of Terry Green, Dan Lehmann, Luke Hewitt and Luke Clark — who conducted the interview — were super impressive.
“They have the community and the footy club first and foremost and it’s about providing a safe environment for young men …at no stage were they willing to give up anything more than what’s best for the footy club,’’ Poholke said.
“They couldn’t have represented their footy club any better.’’
Leigh Poholke is a four-time premiership player at Sorrento after debuting in 2010, developing into one of the premier forwards in Peninsula football.
He also had a two-season stint at Karingal in 2015-16, kicking 40 goals in 16 games.
Myles Poholke, 26, played all of his juniors at Sorrento and was taken by Adelaide in the 2016 draft at pick No.44 and played 16 AFL games across four seasons. He has been a leading player in the MPFNL over the past three seasons.
