FRANKSTON YCW coach Wayne Capp says his side can still win a fifth successive premiership, despite slumping to a fourth-straight loss on Saturday.

The Stonecats went down to Sorrento, 12.14 (86) to 10.12 (72), in front of a big crowd at McFarlane Reserve.

“Bloody oath, mate,’’ Capp fired back when asked if YCW can win the flag.

“We haven’t seen anything to indicate otherwise. We’ve run Mt Eliza and Sorrento to within a couple of kicks with a lot of our senior players out. We’ve got those guys to come back in. We’ve proven we can beat Edithvale and Sorrento, so we are confident we will get back on the winner’s list, and stay there, come next game.

“We are really looking forward to it. The boys have really stuck together…’’

Back in Round 1, Frankston YCW thrashed Sorrento by 63 points.

But the ladder-leading Sharks turned the tables on Saturday, sprinting to a 14-point lead in the opening quarter and staying in front.

Sorrento coach Luke Tapscott didn’t play but the Sharks had many winners. Captain James Hallahan capped a best-on-ground display with three goals, while Shannon Gladman, Nick Corp, Mitch Hallahan and ex-Magpie Chris Dawes (four goals) also were influential.

For YCW, skipper Jie Coghlan led from the front, and Jacob Cheverly, Lachy Street (four goals), Kyle Hutchison and comeback forward Lew Roberts (three) tried hard.

Capp said the Stonecats were “bitterly disappointed’’ to lose. “We set ourselves to win and gave ourselves a shot at it but unfortunately just didn’t have enough polish in the end,’’ he said.

A giant of peninsula football, Frankston YCW has won seven of the past eight flags. But these are rare testing times for the Stonecats, with many unable to recall the last time they lost four on the bounce.

“We are not happy with what’s happened but there is a steely resolve among the group now to make it right,’’ Capp said.

“We are hearing the noise from outside about people writing us off and whatever but we are super keen to get back on the winning list, and we’re confident we can.’’

At Madsen Reserve, Mt Eliza edged Frankston Bombers by three points in a low-scoring arm wrestle.

With Harper Leonard, Dylan Barry, Sam Gill, Shane Tennant and Box Hill Hawks player Ryan McGannon leading the way, the Redlegs held on to win 4.12 (36) to 3.15 (33).

Mt Eliza won, despite failing to kick a goal after half time.

The Redlegs side included youngsters Luca Goonan and Tom Freeman.

For the Bombers, gun defender Ben Northover tried hard, along with Corey Buchan, Ryan Marks-Logan and Waide Symes.
