Southern league: Dingley locks in three key recruits for 2020

The Dingoes have regained former juniors Aaron Dunne and Jack Williams as one-point players and added club great Tony Lavars and former AFL player Darren Kappler as assistant coaches.

Six weeks ago they celebrated their fourth Southern league Division 1 premiership in five years.

Four weeks ago they farewelled the coach who oversaw the flags, Shane Morwood.

And this week the Dingoes have made a flurry of appointments and signings as they begin life after Morwood.

The former Collingwood star coached Dingley for nine years and through it all he had Brad Collins at his side as an assistant.

Collins, a premiership coach in his own right at Moorabbin in 2005, has taken on a different role, director of coaching, in support of new coach Danny Ades.

Ades will also get back-up from two new senior assistant coaches, former Dingley premiership star and SFNL interleague captain Tony Lavars and ex-league player Darren Kappler.

Collins said the club was thrilled to lock in two assistants with the credentials of Lavars and Kappler, who had a role with the reserves this year.

Like Collins, former Fitzroy, Sydney and Hawthorn wingman Kappler is a Southern league premiership coach, at Murrumbeena in 2002.

Joel Webb will guide the Under 19s.

On the recruiting front, former juniors Jack Williams and Aaron Dunne have returned to the club — as one-point players.

Both went on to the Sandringham Dragons (Williams captained the Under 18 side and progressed to Sandringham VFL) and both are coming from MPNFL clubs, Williams from Bonbeach and Dunne from Mt Eliza, where he was vice-captain.

Dunn also played at Noble Park in the Eastern league.

The Dingoes have picked up another player from the MPNFL, Seaford big Matt Terech, a former Chelsea Heights and East Malvern player.

Collins said he and Morwood had put a focus on junior development when Morwood landed at Dingley, and the club would continue to promote and develop its young talent.

He said up to dozen players were coming out of the Under 19s, were committed to playing senior football and would be introduced to the teams.

“That side of it, local talent, is a big thing for our club,’’ Collins said.
