Southern league 2019: Keysborough bounces Springvale Districts by 106 points

It was the match of the round in Division 2, but it turned into a mismatch as Keysborough demolished Springy Districts.

Yes, that score is right.

Keysborough really did defeat Springvale Districts by 106 points at Newcomen Rd Reserve on Saturday.

The result was hardly a surprise — Keysy’s loss to Doveton Eagles last weekend was their first of the season — but the margin sent eyebrows skywards.

The Southern league Division 2 match of the day was a mismatch.

The Burras bolted from the blocks with a seven-goal first quarter and added another five in the second.

Remarkably, the Demons, so free scoring this season, didn’t manage a goal in the first half as they went in 75 points in arrears.

Their task at that stage was to earn some respectability but they were outscored nine goals to four in the second half as the margin blew out past three figures.

“We played as well as we could … we kicked a goal in the first 20 seconds and we kept rolling,’’ coach Matty Ferguson said.

“The boys were pretty amazing to be honest.

“They were stinging from last week. They were very disappointed with how they played last week and I was really expecting a big response. But I didn’t expect that! I think the big ground really suits us and we used the footy better than we ever have. Our ball movement was sensational.’’

Star Riet Pal was the best player on the ground, kicking three goals to go with his 30 possessions.

Paul is showing the benefits of training with Collingwood VFL’s squad one night per week.

“He played in the middle — and he was incredible,’’ Ferguson said.

Tim Werner slotted another four goals and Matt Carnelley three on a day when 10 Burras set the flags waving.

Veteran Bomber Goodes, Mick Downie and ruckman Bryce Sutton were worthy contributors too.

“Sensational. He wound back the clock with hard footy all day,’’ Ferguson said of Goodes, who received the Shaun Oliver Medal that recognises the former Keysborough and Parkmore player who drowned in 2017, aged 32.

Ferguson said the fact that his team featured four Under 19s players — 16-year-old Simon Marchese, Dion Elefantis, Mitchell Brittain and Zac Milverton — added to merit to the victory.

SINKING FEELING AT SOUTHERN GROUND

WHAT'S IN A NICKNAME, SFNL STYLE?

Keysborough has played one less game than Springvale Districts and Doveton Eagles and sits on top of the ladder.

But Ferguson said he expected Districts to hit back hard.

“I’ve got no doubt they’ll be a totally different proposition when we face them again,’’ he said.

The Demons scratched around to find six players for their list of best and came up with Dave Monaghan, Jack Allender, Brody Ledder, Craig Keenan, Nathan Brown and Ryan Cunningham.

Doveton Eagles were the other big winners of the round, thumping Skye by 80 points. Adam Read kicked eight of the Eagles’ 20 goals.
