Jackson Peet credits representative footy for opening several doors in his career.

Poised for his fifth SFNL interleague outing, Peet calls the match an opportunity for young players “to showcase what they can do”.

A chance to represent Victoria emerged from one of Peet’s interleague appearances, and VFL opportunities stemmed from that match in the Big V.

“It’s one of the best things about these opportunities,” Peet said.

“I would’ve been 20 odd at the time and I was lucky enough to go up to Queensland for Vic Metro.

“Interleague and any rep footy gives you the ability to showcase what you can do in front of a new and fresh set of eyes, you never know who is watching.

“Interleague, for me, took me down a road where I played a Vic game and then ended up with a couple VFL stints as well.

“It does open up opportunities to showcase what they can do and that’s probably the best thing about it.”

Peet claims he’s “passed that now” in terms of higher honours but considers letting the chance go by as “silly”.

After running it by Dingley – and Southern league assistant – coach Zach Horsley, Peet was all in.

“I cross-checked it with ‘horse’ (Horsley) to say ‘what do you want me to do?’ being one of the older players in our group at Dingley now,” he said.

“He asked ‘why are you asking me this question? Of course we want you there’.

“That was a big one but to be involved in the system, you don’t know how many more of these opportunities you’re going to get.

“If I am lucky enough to get a go at it, I’d be silly to pass it up.”

As for the players he will run out with, Peet hasn’t seen a list across his four years as strong.

“I don’t know the final squad, but being at a couple of training sessions, you can see the talent pool that’s there,” he said.

“There’s a lot of VFL kids mixed with older blokes who have had that VFL experience

“From each of my rep footy games, I haven’t seen a list posted with as much quality – on paper, you have to put it all together – as the one that is potentially going out.

“It’s exciting and it’s good to see.”
