SFNL: Carrum Patterson Lakes has won four in a row to go 4-1 into the interleague bye

Carrum Patterson Lakes coach Brad Canavan “saw patches” of how he wanted his side to play in round 1 and the Lions have since pounced on a terrific run of form. He explains the areas they have improved.

Carrum Patterson Lakes coach Brad Canavan says his side’s purple patch is a result of “a combination of things”.

Method, preparation and execution are among them.

But overall, it’s a general lift in standards.

After dropping the opening round to Black Rock, the Lions have won four on the spin, defeating Frankston Dolphins, Narre South Saints, Ashwood and Heatherton.

They sit outright second on the ladder with a percentage of 240.

“The most pleasing thing has been the commitment to wanting to improve,” Canavan said.

“We’ve been working really hard with our assistant coaches on each line and watching some film.

“On game day, the implementation of our game plan, doing our system for longer periods and more consistently.

“Our standards have just been better.”

The Lions would be alongside South Mornington undefeated if it wasn’t for some wasteful kicking in round 1.

Instead of beating themselves up for it, Canavan said the Lions took as much out of the loss as they would have from a win.

“We saw patches of it in round 1 but we just kicked poorly for goal,” he said.

“We actually came out of round 1 thinking ‘alright, if we were tighter in front of goal it might’ve been a different story’.

“I don’t think the gap between round 1 and 2 was that great in terms of improvement, I think we saw enough in round 1 to think ‘if we kick better, we’ll get the results’.

“The retainment of our list was critical and we’ve topped up with some nice recruits.

“I think one thing we’re doing well is that we’re training all together, we’ve got the under-19s training with us in a push on the one-club philosophy.”

Mathew Baxter (23 goals) and Alex Wilson (21) have been potent inside 50 while teenager Josh Bowman snagged three late on debut.

Canavan is happy with the Lions’ form but says “it’s early” and still has a long list of areas his side can improve.

“Understanding one on one versus zoning is something we’re working on as a group,” he said.

“Our ball use going inside 50 is another area, tidying that up, and then obviously personnel … our depth is pretty good, so we’re looking forward to having pressure on spots.

“It makes blokes listen and do what the coaches want to do.”

The Lions take on South Mornington following the bye this weekend.

Elsewhere, South Mornington defeated Lyndhurst, 11.8 (74) to 7.4 (46), to improve its record to 5-0.

Brett Mccleary, Zac Kurts, Samuel Dalziel, Jayden Davis, Jacob Rowler and Chris Baker were among the Tigers’ best while Anthony Giuliano booted another four goals.

Bailey Smith, Stephen Williams, Will Borthwick, Charlie Gardiner, Jamie Connor and James Taylor were the Lightning’s best.

Black Rock kept Ashwood winless for another week with a 17.5 (107) to 11.13 (79) win.

Cooper Ferries kicked seven while Ned Fallon slotted three.

Frankston Dolphins are starting to build, winning their second successive match.

Tyler Black kicked nine goals in his side’s 210-point win over Narre South Saints.

The Dolphins rattled home 12 goals in an eye-catching second term.
