SFNL: A South Mornington combo are both on track to challenge 100 goals

One forward kicking 50 goals in a season is a win, let alone two with 50 plus halfway during the year. South Mornington captain Quinn Christy speaks on the season his two forwards are having.

If a modern forward giving 100 goals in a season a nudge is extremely rare then two giving it a red-hot shake is completely unheard of.

Southern league Division 4 front runners South Mornington have the unheard in its sights, with two dynamite forwards kicking a stack of goals in the Tigers’ enchanting winning run.

The Tigers, undefeated and leading all comers, have kicked an imperious 162 goals from 10 matches this season, 112 of which have come from the boot of either Anthony Giuliano (57) or Travis French (55).

The pair sit one and two in the league goal kicking 15 goals ahead of third.

South Mornington captain Quinn Christy agrees 100 goals from a forward in modern footy is rare and believes if they are both to reach the milestone, it shows more of a broader picture.

“I think it just shows what position the club is in, what type of footy the team is playing,” he said if they’re both to near 100 goals at seasons end.

“To have two tracking along pretty nicely just shows the position the club is in as a whole, to be able to have multiple goal kickers around that high range.

“It’s unbelievable.”

Christy said the chalk and cheese-like difference between the pair makes them so dangerous.

“Probably their versatility of them up forward,” he said.

“Frenchy has 55, he’s a bigger-body, kick it in on his head, he doesn’t need the perfect delivery.

“Then Gigs (Giuliano) is a little bit of the opposite, he comes out attacking the footy, crosses the 50 and is more of that leading style of player.

“Both of them; it doesn’t matter on the type of entry we have, kicking to their advantage or just putting it on their head, they just seem to make it work and put it through the big sticks.”

Giuliano currently averages 5.7 a game while French averages 5.5.

With seven matches left in the home and away season, plus a likely minimum of two finals, the pair’s current speed should see them come extremely close.

Christy said while he would like to see them both reach triple-figures, the Tigers won’t look for the pair as the club is focused on bringing home the Division 4 premiership.

“Team comes first and they just seem to be on the receiving end of a lot of goals,” he said.

“We will get down to that when we see how they’re tracking later on, hopefully we don’t need to change our game plan too much.

“The boys seem to just get the job done.”

East Brighton’s (Division 2) Tom Lamb is the only other player to have kicked 50 or more goals in the Southern league this season.

The Tigers have a top-of-the-table clash with Moorabbin Kangaroos this Saturday.
