School Sport Victoria finalises boys and girls U15 and U12 state teams

Sons and daughters of former AFL players have made the cut for the School Sport Victoria rep teams. See the lists.

Even with Port Adelaide star Xavier sitting it out for a stretch with a knee injury, the Duursma name has been prominent in football this season.

Xavier’s sister Yasmin caught some attention when, in her first year of football, she was runner-up in the Gippsland Power Girls best and fairest.

In May, Zane Duursma made an impressive debut at the age of 15 for the Power in the NAB League Boys.

Now the fourth of Dean and Susie Duursma’s children is making news.

Willem Duursma, 14, has been selected as a bottom-age player in the School Sport Victoria 15 years and under football team.

The Foster Secondary College student is playing in the Thirds for Foster and in the Under 14s for Inverloch-Kongwak (where he’s coached by former Richmond player Allister Scott).

Two years ago he was named in the SSV 12 years and under boys team.

Dean Duursma said his youngest son was “almost a mini-me of Xavier’’.

“Same shape, same running capacity,’’ he said.

“He’s going to be a little bit taller … at the same age he’s probably 10cm taller than Xavier was.

“But everything else is similar. He’s very clean skilled, he’s a beautiful kick of the footy, he doesn’t panic under pressure.’’

There is another notable name in the team: Levi Ashcroft, 14, the son of Sandringham VFL CEO and former Brisbane star Marcus.

Levi is in Year 9 and already playing for Brighton Grammar School’s First 18 alongside his brother Will, a Victorian Metro Under 17 representative this year.

His sister Lucy, 11, is also a Big V selection, in the 12 years and under girls team.

Lucy Ashcroft is in the 12 years and under girls team.

The sons of former AFL players Darren Bewick and David Rodan also made state Under 12 sides.

The SSV did not select state teams last year owing to Covid, but pushed ahead with them for 2021.

Although it appears the national championships will not go ahead, the SSV has named two male and female teams in three of the four age groups with the intention of them playing each other.
