You can be sure AFL scouts will keep a sharp eye on the Australian Football showcase at the Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham this Sunday.
The finest 12 and Under and 15 and Under footballers will represent Victoria in what is, for some, an important step towards their AFL dream.
“Half the side can end up in the AFL, history shows,’’ Vic Country 12-and-under coach Leigh McQuillen said.
“My first side I was with five years ago, they will go into next year’s draft.
“And I reckon there will be 10 to 12 of those boys that get picked up.’’
McQuillen says the Vic Country 12-and-under side is dotted with young stars.
“I reckon I’ve got six genuine, bona fide stars, and I’m talking six top liners,’’ he said.
“Six who I’d be very surprised if they didn’t make it.’’
Youngsters from as far as Swan Hill, Echuca, Sale and Wangaratta are among the teams.
Irymple Secondary College, in Mildura, is celebrating after two of its students, Colby Marr and Sachin Tyrrell (pictured, top), made the Victoria Country 12 and under side.
“To have two out of 23 students come from not only Sunraysia but ISC is amazing,’’ the College said.
Some players have had to travel up to six hours for trials and trainings.
AFL stars Nathan Jones and Lachie Whitfield played in the Vic under-12s.
The Vic Metro 12-and-under side includes sons of former AFL players Darren Bewick and David Rodan.
Brother and sister Charlie and Eden Rowe, from Mt Eliza, will play for Victoria this weekend – continuing the family’s sporting success.
Their older brother Patrick Rowe is one of the state’s most promising cricketers and made his first-class debut for Australia A last year.
Siblings Lucy and Levi Ashcroft have also gained selection.
Their father, Marcus, was a three-time premiership-winning onballer and 300-game player with Brisbane and is now general manager of VFL club Sandringham.
Lucy will play at Under 12 level and Levi in the Under 15s.
This year Levi joined his talented brother Will in the strong Brighton Grammar School’s First 18.
On Sunday he’ll have Willem Duursma from Foster as a teammate.
Willem is the younger brother of Port Adelaide star Xavier and wore the Big V as an Under 12 in 2018.
Football talent flows through the family.
Willem’s other brother, Zane, made his NAB League Boys debut at age 15 this year for Gippsland Power.
And his sister Yasmin, in her first year of football, was runner-up in the Gippsland Power Girls best and fairest.
Willem’s father, Dean, said his son was “almost a mini-me of Xavier’’.
“Same shape, same running capacity,’’ he said.
“He’s going to be a little bit taller… at the same age he’s probably 10cm taller than Xavier was.
“But everything else is similar. He’s very clean skilled, he’s a beautiful kick of the footy, he doesn’t panic under pressure.’’
All players will be presented with their Big V jumpers this weekend before showing off their skills at Barker Oval.
