EASTERN
Premier Division (Chandler Medal): Lachie Johns, Vermont, and Blake Pearson, Norwood
Onballer Lachie Johns was a standout this season in the Eagles’ pursuit of a third consecutive flag, being named captain in the team of the year. The dual premiership skipper found plenty of the ball while also kicking 16 goals, playing seven of the Eagles’ eight matches and helping his side to the minor premiership. He was Vermont’s sixth player since 2005 to take the honour.
Pearson was a major addition to the Norwood midfield full-time this season after 89 games in the state league. He played all eight of Norwood’s matches this season, kicking 13 goals on his way to selection in the team of the year. Pearson was the club’s first winner of the Chandler Medal.
Reserves: Brenton Wells, Noble Park
Under 19: Joshua Parker, Berwick Blue
Division 1 (Kenneth Wright Medal): Austin Smith, Mooroolbark
The dynamic midfielder arrived from Yarra Glen ahead of this season with big expectations – and he certainly delivered. Smith snagged eight votes in the final three rounds to storm home, pipping Bayswater’s Ben White, 16 to 14.
Reserves: Alexander Magnano, Park Orchards
Under 19s: Jarryd Van Grondelle, Wantirna South Green
Division 2 (Paul Edie Medal): Liam Kidd, South Belgrave
A second successive league medal win for Kidd after taking the Division 3 honour in 2019. He finished on 10 votes to claim this year’s prize – but it wasn’t as clear cut as his runaway win two years ago. Teammate Tim “Bull’’ Smith had finished atop the voting after a leading season in front of goals, but he was ruled ineligible due to suspension. A solitary vote received for the final match edged the South Belgrave captain ahead of a field of six others tied on nine votes.
Reserves: Liam Carroll (Knox) and Jack Walton (The Basin)
Under 19: Nathan Hare, Boronia
Division 3 (Perc James Medal): Paul Chadwick (Scoresby) and Ryan Phillips (Warrandyte)
Scoresby coach Kristian Bardsley was on the money when he touted Magpie veteran Chadwick “probably still the best player in the comp” earlier this year. Pinched his last vote in the second-last round to finish tied on 13 apiece with Phillips. As untaggable as they come in Division 3. Phillips, a former top division forward, kicked 35 goals from 10 matches to lift Warrandyte to the minor premiership. They call him “Buckets’’ because of the size of his hands, and he certainly clunked plenty of marks this year.
Reserves: Dylan Agnew, East Burwood
Under 19: Nicholas Day, Donvale
Division 4 (Stephen Jones Medal): Ben Slattery, Chirnside Park
Chirnside Park coach Dave Newlands declared shortly before the count that “if he (Slattery) doesn’t win the league best and fairest, I’ll be shocked”, adding that his star midfielder had an “unbelievable” season. The votes reflected those sentiments, as Slattery finished three votes clear on top. Played a big part in the Panthers’ push back into finals contention.
