REVEALED: The Dandenong Stingrays most likely to get drafted

The Dandenong Stingrays could have a draft bolter, with coach Nick Cox listing the club’s top prospects in the AFL draft.

The Dandenong Stingrays’ class of 2022 has already had one player make it on to an AFL list — Jai Culley, who was snapped up by West Coast Eagles at pick No.1 in the mid-season rookie draft.

Now it’s time for more Stingrays to take the plunge.

Coach Nick Cox reckons the Stingrays have “three, possibly four, real live chances” in the AFL draft on November 28-29.

He says classy and composed midfielder Henry Hustwaite, the boy from Rosebud, is “a certainty” to get drafted.

“He’d be our number one (prospect),” Cox said.

“He’s elevated from the start of the year into a range of 15 to 25 I would have thought.

“His transformation from the start to the finish of the year has been extraordinary.”

Stingrays captain and former Beaconsfield junior Mitch Szybkowski is also a strong chance to join an AFL list, according to Cox.

“He’s been consistent from start to finish, some clubs have got him as high as 20 but I reckon 25 to 40 range,” Cox said.

“He’s a player who does everything well without having that thing that stands out massively. So his consistency across all assets is pretty good.

“Sydney and teams like that love him because he does everything really well, he’s a good human, he’s quite humble. Yeah, I don’t think he’ll have an issue (getting picked up), it’s just where he goes, mate.”

Cox said running machine Jaxon Binns, a product of the Berwick juniors, could be picked up between picks 30 and 50.

“He’s been elevated on the back of what he can do with his running ability. It’s extraordinary to be honest,” he said.

“He’s a role player type, a wing, high half forward who can just run at the same pace from start to finish.

“There are still a few queries on his contest work at times but his improvement after coming back from school footy, probably his last three to four games, plus that national game, he was probably our best player once he came back.“

Cox said Finn Emile-Brennan was chance to go late in the draft or in the rookie draft, primarily because of “the way he kicks the footy”.

Ball magnet Taj Campbell-Farrell, who tied for the Morrish Medal, could also attract AFL clubs’ attention.

“Averaging over 30 possessions in a league competition is pretty good,” Cox said.

“He might get a late look, if not he’ll have to go and bide his time in the VFL.”

A Stingrays draft bolter could be Ziggy Toledo-Glasman, a mobile forward who caught the eye late in the season after playing a senior game at Mt Eliza in the MPNFL.

“He’s actually been talked about a fair bit in the last couple weeks by clubs,” Cox said.

“He’s a developing tall, he missed a lot of footy through injury…he’s showed some real glimpses at 195cm, quite mobile, kicks goals, hits the scoreboard.

“He showed a bit in the last few games when he went up the ground and did a bit more. He’s been talked about as a possible late rookie as well.”
