DIGGERS Rest rebounded from its four-point loss to unbeaten Rupertswood with a hard-fought victory over reigning Riddell District Football League premier Macedon on Saturday.
Beaten in a close encounter in Round 4, the Burras held firm in the last quarter to claim a 7.7 (49) to 5.11 (41) victory over the Cats.
Macedon was its own worst enemy in the final term, kicking 1.10 from 11 scoring shots to hand the match to Diggers Rest.
In contrast, the Burras recorded 3.4 from seven scoring shots as the match opened up in the last quarter.
Both sides only hit the scoreboard a combined 12 times to three-quarter-time, before they piled on 4.14 in a last quarter headlined by Macedon’s wasted chances.
Stuart Clarke was a standout for the victors, while on-baller Casey Summerfield led the way for the Cats.
Cameron McCabe, Taylor Hine and Thomas Taylor were other key figures in Diggers Rest’s victory.
In other results, Romsey held Lancefield goalless in a 19.18 (132) to 0.2 (2) thumping, while Wallan smashed Rockbank by 187 and Riddell demolished Broadford by 195 points in another round of lopsided results.
The gap between the finals contenders and the bottom sides were again exposed as Wallan, Romsey and Riddell combined for 78 goals to the two majors managed by the bottom-three teams.
The Bombers had an incredible 15 goalkickers in their victory, while Josh Barber led the way with six majors as Wallan won its fifth match on the trot to sit ahead of Rupertswood on percentage.
The Sharks made it five from five with a 36-point win over Woodend-Hesket, while Sunbury Kangaroos went down by nine points against Melton Centrals.
The usual suspects led the way in Rupertswood’s 10.10 (70) to 4.10 (34) victory, with contributions from Nash Egan, Brett Chambers and Brent Swallow ensuring their side maintained their unbeaten run.
James Aquilina’s three goals sunk Subury Kangaroos 6.10 (46) to 5.7 (37).
