WALLAN tuned up for its top-of-the-table blockbuster against fellow unbeaten side Rupertswood by claiming a 75-point victory over Melton Centrals on Saturday.
The Magpies and Sharks are two games clear of Macedon and Woodend-Hesket at the top of the Riddell District Football League ladder ahead of their Round 7 fixture.
Andrew Saladino and Jesse Davies led the way for Wallan in the weekend’s 19.12 (126) to 8.3 (51) triumph at Greenhill Reserve.
The Magpies blew the game open in the second term after leading by seven points at quarter-time, slamming on seven goals to one.
The visitors were more competitive in the second half, but the damage had been done as Wallan recorded its sixth straight win to start 2018.
The club is only four wins away from matching its effort of 10 victories from 2017, when it finished outside the finals spots on percentage.
The Magpies will have to be mindful of the competition’s leading goalkicker Todd Podolczak, who bagged 11 majors in Rupertswood’s 213-point thumping of Rockbank on Saturday.
Podolczak, Cameron McRorie (10 goals) and Luke Cannon combined for 26 goals in their side’s 36.20 (236) to 3.5 (23) win.
Woodend-Hesket beat Diggers Rest for the first time since 2009 in the upset of the round, moving to 4-2 with a 15.9 (99) to 13.10 (88) victory.
The Hawks are fourth on the ladder, behind reigning premier Macedon on percentage.
Alistair Rae was the hero with five goals including two late majors for Woodend-Hesket, while Tom Gawthrop continued his fine season with four.
Macedon held Broadford scoreless in a 168-point demolition, Riddell defeated Romsey by 67 points and Sunbury Kangaroos accounted for Lancefield by 127 points.
