Sunbury Kangaroos showed the Riddell District Football League what it was capable of with a hard-fought win against reigning premier Macedon on Saturday.
Although out of the running for finals, the Kangaroos prevailed by three points over the Cats, 6.6 (42) to 5.9 (39), to record their fifth win of the campaign.
The visitors kicked four goals to one in the middle two terms before holding off a Cats fightback.
Coach Anthony Leydin said it was a rewarding win which showed his team was “more than capable” against any side.
“When you lose a few on the trot and things aren’t going well, it’s easy to drop your head and put the cue in the rack,” he said.
“But the type of players we’ve got, their attitude and mindset to not take a backwards step, they proved that on the day if they pull their weight, they are as good as any.
“They dug deep and showed resilience, which is what you look for in those situations, when there is nothing to play for but pride and competitive spirit and that’s what happened.”
Sunbury is likely to finish the season in ninth spot after its last match at home at Eric Boardman Reserve against Rockbank on Saturday.
