Mick Molloy, a football champion?
You betcha, with the radio and TV funnyman producing undeniable proof he could play the game while attending a Mt Eliza footy club reunion last week.
He whipped out the best and fairest trophy he won in Mt Eliza’s under-15s in 1981.
“He likened himself to Greg Williams,” Mick’s mate and former Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown said at a Mt Eliza function back in March.
“He was a centreman, not great stamina, but he found the footy. I think that story has a few whiskers on it.”
Mick has got back involved with the Redegs this season and is the club’s No. 1 ticket-holder.
STANDBY for some big recruiting news and a coaching announcement at Mt Eliza.
Redlegs president Mic Dunne said a field of five is in the running for the coaching job.
Frankston Dolphins assistant coach Paul Goonan is one of them, as is Shane Tennant, who took the Mt Eliza coaching reins last month after the departure of Nick Claringbold.
“I reckon it’s only a couple of weeks before we make an announcement,’’ Dunne said.
“We are well pleased with our progress.’’
As for recruits, Dunne said: “We’ve got a few big stories in terms of people coming to the club as well, around players and that. We’ve been fairly active in the last four weeks.’’
AS defending champs Pines head into another finals campaign next week, their champion full forward Aaron Edwards is being urged to play on next year.
The 35-year-old former AFL man is in “really good nick”, according to Pythons coach Paddy Swayn.
“He’s got really fit, so there’s probably no reason he can’t keep going,” Swayn said.
“He’s kicked 10 goals in the past two weeks and it hasn’t been great weather.”
AND, almost 12 months after Pines sailed through the 2018 finals undefeated, comes this summation from Swayn: “We are actually a better side than what we were last year.’’
“We’re better skilled, we’re probably fitter, we have a greater understanding of how we want to play,” he said.
As for going back-to-back, Swayn said: “You need luck. Everyone in the five is there for a reason. You just need a little bit of luck.”
PINES, though, could be without the man who was best-on-ground in last season’s grand final, Perry Lewis-Smith.
He suffered an ankle injury while playing with Port Melbourne last week and by all reports may struggle to get back this season.
But the Pythons could regain former AFL star Robin Nahas for finals.
GREAT news at Rosebud, with Buds captain and champion Greg Bentley recommitting for season 2020.

WHAT about the goal-kicking exploits of Edi-Asp under-14 player Harry Demattia!
A 15-goal haul a few weeks ago took him to 99 for the season.
Showing no signs of nerves, talented Harry fired off 10 goals to notch the season’s first century — and then slotted 10 the following week, too.
All up, he has kicked 119 goals in 11 games this season.
It’s no wonder everyone’s wild about Harry!
