TYABB footballer Callum Morris was starting to think he was cursed.
Loss after loss, after loss ... poor Morris went 84 games in a row without a win.
Five lean years went by.
But, as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, and Morris finally got to celebrate a win again when the Yabbies reserves side beat Somerville a couple of weeks ago.
“I did start to think maybe I was the curse because when the twos won a couple of games (last season), I was in the ones, and when the ones won a couple of games a few years ago, I was playing twos,” Morris said.
“I was starting to think it was me who was the issue.”
Morris admitted he was starting to think he may never be part of a win.
“I’m 29 now, and I just wanted to get one more win and I wasn’t sure it was ever going to come or not,” he said.
The win — Tyabb edged Somerville by five points — sparked jubilant scenes.
“It was a very, very strange feeling. We hit the front with four minutes to go, and it was the longest four minutes I’ve ever experienced. Then the siren went — I was running around, jumping, hugging blokes,’’ Morris said.
“It’s been a bit of a joke at the club, my streak. Most of the guys came to me and realised I’d finally broken the streak and they were very happy for me.”
Morris, who said he wouldn’t wish such a long losing streak upon anybody, admitted he considered chucking it in as the losses piled up.
“The thought did cross my mind, but I’ve never met a better bunch of blokes to play footy with and just the thought of getting a win with those blokes pretty much made me keep going,” he said.
Alas, Morris’s misfortune appears to have returned.
Last week, Tyabb’s reserves side made it two wins in a row, but Morris missed the game because he had been promoted to the seniors (who lost).
