HE’D barely touched the ball in the first three quarters, but Karingal spearhead Leigh Poholke produced when it mattered on Saturday.
His three last-quarter goals helped the Bulls turn a 30-point deficit into a rousing six-point win over Mornington in the wet at Ballam Park.
After trailing 10.7 to 5.7 at the last change, Karingal stormed home to win 12.8 (80) to 11.8 (74) — and climb into the top five.
Karingal coach Michael Triep admitted he was close to benching Poholke and fellow forward Cocky Hay at three-quarter time because they’d had little impact in the slippery conditions.
But he stuck with them and it paid dividends. Poholke kicked a goal early in the last term before snapping the last two goals of the game to secure the Bulls’ best win of the season.
“His last six minutes were super,’’ Triep said.
“He tells me that’s what he’s paid for.’’
Lionhearted Karingal ruckman Grant Goodall was named best-on-ground after igniting the Bulls after half-time.
“He was unbelievable in the second half,’’ Triep said.
“He took it upon himself. He’s on one knee … he’s got plenty of cortisone in there holding it together but he wants to play. He started jumping and, mate, he was roving his own footy … he was the main difference.’’
Karingal midfielder Tom Wilkinson was also huge in the midfield, while skipper Aaron Paxton and 16-year-old first-gamer Josh Bradley impressed.
Triep says finals are definitely the aim for the Bulls (3-4-1), who were winless last year.
A five-goal haul by big Tim Bongetti and some clutch play from the experienced Paul “Chewy’’ Scanlon helped Pines beat Bonbeach by 33 points.
Bonbeach cut Pines lead to three goals in the last term before Scanlon made his presence felt.
“Chewy Scanlon had a couple of key moments where he steadied the ship, won the ball and used the ball really well and we kicked a couple of goals, and probably broke them,’’ Pines coach Paddy Swan said.
“He’s got that mature head, knowing what’s got to be done at the right time.’’
Swayn also praised the Pythons’ youngsters, especially Patrick Jackson, after the 13.6 (84) to 7.9 (51) win that lifted them to second spot.
“That’s where our growth is coming from, our young kids are starting to gel. They’re getting more comfortable with senior footy,’’ he said.
Pines was also well served by former AFL man Aaron Edwards, who booted three goals, and Brad Kiely, Corey Ash, Luke Potts and Jack Fisher.
Frankston YCW continued on its merry way, thumping Chelsea by 84 points. League medallist Kyle Hutchison was dominant, while Paul Minchington booted five goals and Anthony Bruhn three. Chelsea’s best were Grant Trew and Jason Clark.
Edi-Asp improved their record to 5-3 with a 12.19 (91) to 12.5 (77) win over Seaford. In-form Eagles spearhead Mick Meehan booted five goals, while Elliot Macquire (three), Angus Macquire and Tim Mannix were other key contributors. Seaford’s Nick Braund played a top game.
Mt Eliza star Justin Van Unen fired off six goals and teenager Brenton Lambert sparkled on debut in the Redlegs’ 38-point win over Langwarrin.
In Nepean league, Sorrento’s sizzling form has delivered it a sixth successive win.
The Sharks kicked 15 goals after halftime to dispatch Pearcedale by 74 points on Saturday – further putting their slow 0-2 start to the season in the distance.
Star recruit Nick Corp kicked six goals and skipper James Hallahan played his best game for the season in the 24.10 (154) to 12.8 (80) win.
Sorrento coach Nick Jewell said Pearcedale served it up to his side, forcing the Sharks to respond.
“Pearcedale brought some pretty good pressure, actually. They’re undefeated at home this year so we knew they’d be keen to play well,’’ he said. “But we restructured a few things at halftime and got to back to playing the way we have been the previous month. It all started to flow.’’
On debut, 17-year-old Joey Boase was named in Sorrento’s best after an excellent game in the midfield, while Jarryd Ferguson played his first game back in the seniors since breaking his leg in round two last year. Highlighting Sorrento’s depth, premiership stars Guy Stringer, Heath Cameron and Plugger Lawson played in the Sharks’ reserves.
Rye snapped a four-game losing streak with a stirring 34-point win over Hastings at Rowley Reserve.
After leading by a point at halftime, the Demons set up victory with a 3.4 to 0.2 third term. Teenager Harrison Devine-Richardson was superb in only his second game, while Ryan Mullett, Jimmy Jennings and Leigh Morse played key roles.
Dromana coach Rikki Johnston booted five goals and young Dean Waugh starred as the Tigers beat Tyabb by 57 points.
Former Carlton and Port Adelaide midfielder Greg Bentley was best-afield in Rosebud’s 126 to 42 win over Crib Point. Keegan Downie booted four goals and Aaron Rose three.
