WITH his first kick, former West Coast Eagle Daniel Kerr put Tyabb in front against Hastings on Saturday.
A big crowd was at Bunguyan Reserve to see Kerr’s cameo for the Yabbies and there were plenty of nods of approval as the home side sprinted to an 18-14 lead at quarter-time.
Just eight minutes in, Kerr, with his trademark shoulder strapping, made his presence felt when he latched on to a mark and went back and drilled a low kick through the middle.
Hastings, the reigning premier, was under the pump — but it responded in fearsome fashion, firing off 18 goals to one after quarter-time to win 20.16 (136) to 4.4 (28).
Kerr, who will line-up with rival side Pearcedale this weekend as his roadshow rolls on, played mainly at half forward with the odd stint on the ball.
His former West Coast teammate Aaron Edwards was among the spectators.
Tyabb coach Mark Paganoni said Kerr fitted in well.
“When he got in the game he certainly looked impressive,’’ he said.
“He’s certainly a bright young fella and I wish him all the best. He was good to have in the group. He grabbed the boys at one stage and had a chat to them, at three quarter time, so he got involved.’’
Hastings coach Brendan Dunne admitted Tyabb’s fast start stunned his side.
“My words to the boys before the game was to expect that and I reckon they shocked us in that first quarter for sure,’’ he said.
“They used the footy really well and they were up and about early. I was just happy with the way my boys responded in that second quarter. Good.’’
Hastings captain Paul Rogasch was best-afield, while Shaun Foster kicked four goals from a wing and brothers Luke and Jake Hewitt were outstanding; Luke booting five goals.
Kerr and controversial ex-player manager Ricky Nixon spoke at a pre-game function in the Tyabb rooms and it was well received.
