AFTER a 10-year AFL career, Andrejs Everitt has returned home, signing with Somerville.
“The Eagle has landed,’’ a posting on Somerville’s Facebook page trumpeted on Monday night.
The former Western Bulldogs, Sydney and Carlton player will be co-coach at Somerville, along with Bevan Malloy.
He met his new teammates at training on Monday evening and got reacquainted with the Eagles jumper he wore as a kid.
“The guys were really excited tonight,’’ Malloy said last night.
Everitt was delisted by Carlton last month after 131 AFL games. He was the Blues’ leading goalkicker in 2015.
His return to Somerville means his football journey has come full circle. He grew up there and played junior footy with the Eagles from the age of nine. His dad, Peter Snr, was president of the junior club.
Somerville beat a raft of clubs, including Pearcedale and Dromana, for the 27-year-old’s signature.
Malloy speaks excitedly about the impact Everitt can have in Nepean league next season.
“He’s a pretty difficult match up at 194cm,’’ he said.
“He’s got the engine to work midfielders over, he’s got pace to burn and obviously he’s got his height. He’s a nightmare match up to be brutally honest.’’
Malloy said he was looking forward to coaching in partnership with Everitt.
“We seem to have pretty similar philosophies and the way we want the game played and the way we want the club viewed from external people is pretty close to be honest,’’ he said.
“It’s exciting. I’m sure I’m going to learn a lot from him and hopefully I can give him a bit of knowledge as well.
“It was nice tonight (Monday), his first night down, to be able to bounce some ideas off each other and gain a greater understanding of what we are both about. He’s pretty excited about the challenges and the group we’ve got to work with. I’m excited…you don’t get to work with people like that very often.’’
