MUCH like the way he plays, Trent Dennis-Lane’s signing with Bonbeach was quick and decisive.
The former Swan and Saint became a Shark last week after just days of consideration.
The ease of which Bonbeach secured the 28-year-old both delighted and surprised Sharks coach Steve Hughes.
“He’s a bloody good fella,’’ Hughes said.
“It’s a really volatile period…and what I’ve found over the past few years is the better the player the more they drag you out. But Trent was the absolute opposite. It effectively took six days, from first conversation to him signing, which I reckon is a credit to him. He knew what he wanted.’’
Dennis-Lane played 29 AFL games with Sydney (19) and St Kilda (10), kicking 39 goals.
This year he captained Sandringham in the VFL, but had opposed its alignment with St Kilda.
Dennis-Lane joins Bonbeach as a playing-assistant coach, and Hughes said he would play in the Sharks’ forward line, alongside league medal winner Shane McDonald.
“He hasn’t really played for a local footy club….and I think he’s looking forward to that culture and camaraderie,’’ Hughes said.
“We will probably play him as more a permanent-type forward.
“It might, hopefully, stretch a few defences. He’s a beautiful kick and he’s got a bit of speed about him.’’
Dennis-Lane’s decision to join Bonbeach was no doubt influenced by his housemate and Bonbeach player Jack Williams.
Hughes said for Bonbeach to land a prized recruit before the end of September was “a big tick’’.
