Paul Scanlon and Tim Bongetti help Pines past Mornington

PINES sees off Mornington, Karingal flashes home to draw with Seaford, Langwarrin upsets Edi-Asp in Peninsula Football League.

PINES’ contingent of former VFL players was to the fore as the Pythons on Saturday grabbed their third victory of the season, a 40-point success over Mornington at Alexandra Park.

The apparently ageless Paul Scanlon, who won the defunct Bendigo Bombers’ best and fairest in 2009 and is one of the most decorated players in country football in the past 15 years, was named best-afield.

Ex-Werribee and Tasmania Devils spearhead Tim Bongetti booted seven goals.

And ex-Frankston Dolphins skipper Luke Potts played a fine game for Pines, which blasted off with a seven-goal first quarter.

For the Bulldogs, Dale Whelan kicked four goals and Will Goosey, the son of legendary Mornington coach and goalkicker Simon, did well in a number of positions.

Karingal surged from 26 points down with nine minutes to go to force a draw with Seaford at Ballam Park.

A snap from Callan Dixon with about 15 seconds to go knotted the scores at 71, Karingal 9.17 and the Tigers 10.11.

“The last minute of the game was just mayhem,’’ Bulls president Digger Watts said.

“The ball was in our forward line basically the whole time but we just couldn’t get a goal. I think after the game both clubs were a little bit flat. But we probably would have stolen it.’’

Watts said the club was satisfied with its progress after a thin 2015.

“We’re certainly competitive. And that’s all you want to be. It gives your supporters hope. Yesterday was pleasing. We didn’t play great football at any stage. I don’t think we were allowed to by Seaford. They were pretty ferocious.

“We just kept going, and that hasn’t been a trademark of ours in the last two years. We’ve got a little bit about us now.’’

The Bulls had lost ace recruit Leigh Poholke to a knee injury early in the first quarter.

Dixon, Harry Czarnecki and Michael Boswell gave good service to the Bulls.

Jackson Mockett, who features in the sporting pages during summer for his fast bowling for Frankston Peninsula (he played for the state Under 19s last season), booted four goals for the Tigers and on-baller Dean Williamson was all hustle around the ground.

Frankston YCW remained undefeated and Bonbeach remained without a win when the Stonecats, strong on every line, powered to a 114-point victory at Cannes Avenue.

David Bodley kicked six goals for the winners.

Langwarrin got on the board when it saw off Edithvale-Aspendale at Regents Park.

The Eagles kicked six goals to one in the second quarter to lead by 22 points at the main break. But they could manage only 1.9 in the second half as Langy triumphed by 19 points.

Kieran Albanese kicked four goals and Blake Peach three for the visitors, and their best included Shane Patterson, Mitch Porter and Nic Tuddenham, a Langwarrin junior who returned to the club this season after stints at Dandenong Stingrays and Frankston.

Mt Eliza is still unconquered after four matches, taking some of the pep out of Chelsea’s jaunty step with a 40-point victory at Emil Madsen Reserve.

The Mounties’ eight-goal third quarter blew the game apart after the Seagulls narrowly led at half time.

Nick Strickland kicked three of them and finished with four.

Anthony Cleary and Karl Lombardozzi also made strong contributions.

In the Nepean league, Sorrento took the whip to struggling Crib Point, winning by 98 points at David McFarlane Reserve.

Former VAFA star Nick Corp kicked five goals for the Sorras and was best-afield, shading Nick Marston and former Demon Luke Tapscott.

Sorrento shared the scoring load, having 13 goalkickers.

For the outclassed Crib, Paul Smith, Taylor Stratton and Kyle Arnott never gave it up.

Staying unbeaten after four rounds, Hastings had a 19-point success over Devon Meadows in Nepean league at Glover Reserve after coming off a four-day break.

The Blues were 46 points up at half time and never relinquished their lead, despite the Meadows peeling off six goals in 10 minutes with the wind in the third quarter.

Class acts Colin McVeigh and Paul Rogasch both kicked four goals, McVeigh slotting two late in the third quarter to keep the Panthers at arm’s length.

“His last three weeks have been super,’’ Hastings coach Brendan Dunne said of McVeigh.

“He’s a very talented footballer.’’

Dunne also lauded the contributions of Steve Robb, Luke Smith and Luke Hewitt.

He said Robb was “one of the best pressure players in the comp’’.

Dunne is perky about his club’s start.

“Yeah, four and zip, no one tipped us at the start of the year to be that,’’ he said.

“Internally we were quite confident in our ability to play our style of footy.’’
