The Northern Football Netball League has been forced to postpone its junior football and netball seasons.

Just a day after junior clubs were told the season had been given the green light, metropolitan Melbourne was plunged back into six weeks of quarantine.

The junior season had been set to kick off on Sunday but Victoria’s growing coronavirus crisis scuppered those plans.

Netball was due to finish its summer season on July 24 and begin a shortened winter season on August 7.

The league will wait for feedback from clubs before making a final decision on the season.

“The Northern Football Netball League has delayed the proposed start date of its junior football and senior netball competitions following (Tuesday’s) announcement from the state

government,” a league statement said.

“The announcement of a return to Stage 3 restrictions throughout metropolitan Melbourne has forced a delay to the proposed start date of all NFNL competitions.

“Club-sanctioned training will also be prohibited from midnight (Wednesday), as per Stage 3

restrictions.

“Further announcements regarding these competitions will be made in the near future after

further consultation with all clubs.”

“The NFNL wishes to take this opportunity to thank all clubs, volunteers, officials, players and parents for your continued patience and co-operation during these challenging and

unprecedented times.”

The senior football season was cancelled on June 2 but the NFNL had been confident a junior season and netball season would still go ahead.

Melbourne’s lockdown has now spread across the northern suburbs, impacting a large number of clubs.

The Whittlesea region recorded five new cases on Tuesday, up to 36 active cases, while Darebin has 16 – an increase of two active cases.

Banyule has eight active cases and Nillumbik has just one active case.
