Calder United will play its first “two or three” matches at Wycheproof this season while a hockey field can be created at merger partner Nullawil’s home ground.
The North Central Football-Netball League also includes a hockey competition, but Nullawil was allowed to enter the league two years ago from the Golden Rivers league without hockey teams.
Wycheproof-Narraport and Nullawil announced a merger for 2025 on the eve of last season.
Meetings next week will determine the site of the hockey field at Nullawil, but Calder United president Rick Allan confirmed Wycheproof will be the merged club’s venue for home matches early in the season that kicks off on April 5.
Calder United is away to Donald in the opening round before back-to-back home matches against reigning premiers Sea Lake-Nandaly and Wedderburn either side of an Easter bye.
“They don’t have a hockey field (at Nullawil) so we’re going to have to make one,” Allan said.
“We don’t have to shift heaven and earth, thankfully.
“We’ve got a couple of spots identified and we’ve got some meetings next week to nail the final spot.
“It’s only going to be a temporary job for a start so there will be marquees and portable toilets.
“But we don’t have an actual date when it will be ready.
“Hopefully we’ve had a good autumn break by then to get the grass up and away.
“We’re fully aware in the next month or two we need to decide where we’re playing so people can plan and prepare.”
Nullawil and Wycheproof-Narraport both missed finals last season in senior football, but could make a quick rebound under joint coaches Daryl Wilson and Jordan Humphreys.
Calder United has retained key players from both teams last season including former Central Murray league star Matt Wade and added Balranald midfielder Kobe Lloyd and Eaglehawk key defender Oscar Maddern.
“Numbers isn’t an issue, which is a nice welcome change,” Allan said.
“We’re going to fill two senior sides quite comfortably, but we’re going to have two junior sides which was main reason for the merger.”
