“I was pulling my hair out at stages. It was very frustrating. We will definitely be doing some work on it this week.”
So said Macleod coach Garry Ramsay as his side booted a wasteful 12.24 to beat Northcote Park on Saturday.
Ramsay said what every supporter at the ground was feeling throughout the clash, the win keeping Macleod in touch with top team Heidelberg after the Tigers prevailed in their Anzac Day clash last week
“The goalkicking on Saturday was a real issue,” Ramsay said.
In the second quarter alone, the Roos had 13 scoring shots for a return of 3.10 and went into the final quarter with a slender two-point lead, 7.19 to 9.5.
Northcote Park actually hit the front early in the last, before Macleod finally started finding the gap between the big posts at more regular intervals. Macleod went on to win by 30 points
Laurie Schubert and Dan O’Brien were outstanding in defence for the Roos, on-baller Liam Brandt was busy all match and Reid Brandt was the standout forward, kicking three goals, even though Ramsay said he “should have ended up with at least six”.
“All in all, I am happy with the win, because it’s a very even competition,” he said.
Meanwhile, Heidelberg will be happy with its fourth straight win, cruising home by 42 points against West Preston-Lakeside despite being outscored by the Roosters after quarter time.
The Tigers slammed on eight goals in the opening term, before the match evened out, Heidelberg winning 14.17 (101) to 8.11 (59).
Coach Charles Gaylard led the way with four goals, supported by Callum Lewis and Ben Cosgriff, with Ryan Stone and high-profile recruit James Magner both booting three goals.
North Heidelberg battled hard in its Division 2 clash with top team Hurstbridge, but eventually went down by 42 points, 11.11 (77) to 18.11 (119).
Brody Tardio, Michael Florance and Marcus Hill were excellent for the Bulldogs, with Shane Harvey slotting four goals.
Banyule recorded its second win of the year in Division 3, but Heidelberg West is still entrenched at the bottom after suffering a 90-point belting at the hands of South Morang.
The Hawks were never in the hunt after quarter-time, going down 22.14 (146) to 8.8 (56) with Brad Moore, Ayden Kelly and Ryan Floyd battling hard all match.
Banyule accounted for Kilmore by 40 points, 12.7 (79) to 5.9 (39). David Stewart was brilliant again for the Bears, while Dan Kelly has nine goals from his only two senior appearances after a bag of five on the weekend.
