Home, sweet home for Greensborough.
The Borough’s first game at War Memorial Reserve delivered a blockbuster Good Friday crowd and a 107-point demolition of NFL Division 1 rival Macleod.
The 22.12 (144) to 5.7 (37) victory is the club’s first triple figure win since another 107-point thrashing, against Whittlesea in 2018.
Ben Pannam was dominant with four goals from midfield, Mitch Hill impressed, kicking 3.7, while star recruit Harvey Daniher added four majors of his own.
After an upset loss to Hurstbridge last week, Borough coach Saade Ghazi said his team wanted to put on a show at home.
“It was disappointing last week because we were in a winning position but Hurstbridge deserved their win,” he said.
“We spoke about it on Tuesday and moved on pretty quick … (today) was definitely important because it’s our first home game and you go to 2-1 or 1-2, so crucial in that sense.
“I’d like to think the players had that in the back of their mind, that’s it’s an important Good Friday game and first home game.”
Greensborough burst out of the blocks, taking a 42-point lead into half-time, and were ruthless in the second half.
Macleod could only register 2.4 to concede it’s first 100-point defeat since losing to Bundoora by 129 points in 2013.
Zak McCubbin and Tom Bell both kick three goals, while Luke Joyce (two) was Macleod’s only multiple goalscorer.
Having taken the coaching reins this season, Ghazi admits it is a transition year for Greensborough.
He’s been particularly pleased with the club’s young players.
Angus Seivers continues to impress as a key defender as does Deakin Lawler in a ruck-forward role, while Jackson Hasler was handed a senior debut.
“Angus, as a tall back, the last two weeks has been really good,” Ghazi said.
“Deakin Lawlor again improved and we brought in Jackson for his first game.
“We want to keep developing, if they deserve an opportunity we’ve give them an opportunity but they’re not young kids either – they’re 18-19 – so we pick our best 22 irrespective of age.”
Greensborough had 12 individual goalkickers in the opening fortnight of the season.
After seeing his team share it around again, with nine differnt scorers, against Macleod, Ghazi was confident his team had the weapons to match it with the competition’s best.
“The boys were pretty good today, we didn’t have a player that didn’t play their role or didn’t play well,” he said.
“Our forward line will be like that, we’ll structure up where we have a range of goalkickers.

“Ben Pannam was probably our best player, Mitch Hill was pretty good up forward and Jordy Smith but it was the old fashioned team effort.”
For Macleod, Seb Latina was the best in defeat, while Joyce, James Williams and Justin White were also strong contibutors.
Both teams will have a week off with Round 3 split over two weeks.
Greensborough will return to action with a blockbuster clash at Montmorency, while Macleod will hope to bounce back when it hosts Northcote Park.
