The first premierships of the NFNL season have been handed out in an action packed women’s grand final day on Sunday.
Montmorency toasted it’s first senior premiership since 1979 with a 28-point win over Banyule in the Division 1 decider.
A strong second half wrapped up a dominant season for the Magpies, in which it lost just one game for the year.
Star ruck Emily Beanland was a standout in the 6.13 (49) to 3.3 (21) triumph and was rewarded with the best-on-ground medal.
Grace Robinson was the leading forward on the day with two goals, while Madeline Gallagher-Beanland, Madeline Ellis, Abbey Ward and Georgia Thomson also shone for Montmorency.
Polly McAuliffe was named Banyule’s best in defeat, while Heidi Cummins, Candice Dyson and Mairead Csar were also prominent.
In Division 2, St Mary’s erased the heart-break of last season with a thrilling 11-point win over Heidelberg.
After losing the decider last season to Eltham, the Burras responded magnificently this season, losing just one game on the way to a maiden women’s premiership.
Trailing by two points at half-time, St Mary’s rallied in the premiership quarter with three goals to snatch a three-point lead at the final change.
Heidelberg hit the front mid-way through the final quarter but the Burras responded again, kicking the last two goals of the game to run out 6.8 (44) to 5.3 (33) victors in an enthralling finish.
Reigning league best-and-fairest Jessica Hardy put her team on her shoulders with a dominant midfielder performance to win the grand final medal and will look to add more silverware to her collection on Rosbrook Medal night.
St Mary’s named Brigid McEntee as its best afield, while Georgia Kitchell, Jemma Chesser, Elyssa Rees and Nat Cora were also impressive.
For Heidelberg, Mia Tascone was named best-on in defeat, while Nikki Watts, Tessa Hankinson and Ella Norris were strong contributors.
Wallan has gone from worst to first to claim a remarkable NFNL Division 3 premiership.
The Magpies won just two games in 2022 but responded magnificently this season, losing just once, on the way to three pieces of history.
The seven-point win over Darebin Falcons 2 is the club’s first women’s title, first Northern league silverware and first senior football premiership since 1992.
Just two behinds were scored in a dour first half – both by Wallan.
However, the game opened up in the second half as Magpie Shazi Cappello kicked the first goal of the day as Wallan took an eight-point lead into three-quarter-time.
Gloria El-Armaly goalled early in the fourth term to put her side 14 points up and it proved decisive.
El-Armaly was rewarded with the grand final medal, while Macey Kubeil, Kia Montgomery, Chelsea Paton, Ava Borg and Shannyn Powell also impressed.
For the Falcons, Tamara Olcorn, Mei Griffin, Alisha Priestley and Riley Magee were the best.
