Hurstbridge’s clash against Greensborough was called off midway through the final quarter on Saturday after veteran Brayden Shaw was knocked unconscious.

Shaw, 33, started convulsing when he fell to the ground after a contest during the Division 1 clash at Ben Frilay Oval.

An ambulance was called and transported the two-time Bundoora premiership captain to Royal Melbourne Hospital before he was released early on Sunday.

Hurstbridge president Mark Donnelly said the knock could spell the end of Shaw’s decorated career.

He captained Bundoora to the 2011 and 2013 premierships before joining Hurstbridge at the end of 2014.

“It’s unclear at the moment on how long he is going to be out for,” Donnelly said on Monday.

“(We) don’t know whether he will be playing again, maybe he might retire.

“I’m unclear on that yet but I know his family is probably indicating to him that his time’s up.”

Both clubs came together and decided to call the game off as trainers attended to Shaw. Vision showed he received the blow in a marking contest.

Greensborough claimed a 113-point victory, 23.14 (152) to 5.9 (39).

“There wasn’t a person at the ground that wasn’t concerned, including the Greensborough supporters,” Donnelly said.

“To their credit, I’ve had phone calls from Greensborough.

“I’ve spoken to Greensborough people and their first question to me is, ‘how’s Shawy going?’

“It was pretty concerning on the day and people have been ringing me and asking how he is. By the reports of what I’ve had from the family and his brother in-law, he’s fine, he’ll get through it.”

Donnelly said the club would not be taking any action over the incident.

“He’s had scans and all that sort of stuff and they’re all clear. He’ll be a bit sore and sorry but from the club’s point of view … we’ve had a look at the incident and there’s nothing in it,” he said.

“It was just an accident in the course of play and we were really thankful Greensborough wanted to call the game off.”
