In 2019, Harris will lead Banyule after being announced as its new coach.
“He knows a lot about our football club … he knows the way we work, he was really passionate about our job and he came highly recommended from a few other people that have been involved in our football club,” football operations manager Jay Brockwell said.
“They couldn’t speak more highly of Paul.”
Harris won four best and fairests at Ivanhoe and claimed the Peter Hutchinson Medal in 2012 as the Division 3 best and fairest, also coaching the club for three seasons.
He has spent the past two years at Bundoora working as an assistant coach under brother in-law Ricky Dyson, helping guide the Bulls to the 2017 Division 1 premiership.
Banyule had 17 applicants for the position after premiership mentor Pete Davey stepped down from the post following the preliminary final defeat.
“He’s beaten some good opposition. It was down to three and we had a long debate on who that was,” Brockwell said.
“We finally got to the decision on Monday night about 8.30pm and we feel like we’ve made the right choice.”
Banyule became the first reigning Division 3 premier to make second tier finals the following year in 2018.
Harris said he wanted to build on the momentum at R.J. Brockwell Oval.
“Externally looking in, I just thought it was a really well run club from where they have come from,” Harris said.
“Off-field, it looks like they have things really well sorted and good links with the junior footy club.
“The model they’ve set up, they’ve done a really good job so it looked like a really good job to get involved with.”
