Replay: NAB League - Tasmania vs Calder Cannons

Tasmania turned on a real show for their home fans to demolish Calder Cannons and maintain their push for a NAB League finals berth.

The Devils virtually had the game won by halftime as they piled on 53 points and restricted their opponents to a mere one goal and two behinds.

And they continued the punishment in an utterly dominant third quarter, scoring 40 unanswered points to lead by 85 at the final change.

Calder did match their rampant hosts in the final quarter, kicking three goals, but the damage was done much earlier with the Devilsrunning out winners by 113 to 30.

PREVIEW: Devils ‘doing state of Tasmania proud’

The Tasmania Devils are playing a brand of footy which would do the state proud, according to coach Jeromey Webberley.

Heading into the final three rounds of the NAB League season, the Devils sit second on the ladder and should strengthen that position when they host the Calder Cannons on Sunday afternoon.

The Cannons have endured a tough season, winning just three games from 10 starts to sit 10th and well out of the finals race.

Webberley believes his side’s brand stacks up against any side in the competition.

“If Tasmanians came to watch us play, I think they would be proud of how our boys are going about it,” he said.

“We’ve become a side who are hard at the contest and our tackling pressure is fantastic. We like to be hard to play against.

“The players have been terrific in the way they’ve brought into what we’ve asked of them as a coaching staff. The other big positive has been how the group has connected and developed together.

“They’ve been fantastic.”

The Devils have had solid contributors across all three lines this season.

Lachie Cowan has been a standout in defence, averaging 28.4 disposals and breaking game’s open with his elite kicking.

Meanwhile, Brandon Leary has kicked 26 goals in 10 games to be the competition’s leading goalkicker.

“Everyone in our side has had their moments,” Webberley said.

“Lachie and Tom McCallum have been standouts in defence. Colby McKercher and Liam Jones continue to find plenty of the footy in the middle of the ground.

“Then we’ve got guys in front of the ball led by Brandon, Seth Campbell and Will Splann who are all capable of kicking goals. They’ve been super consistent.”

The Devils won’t have it all their own way with the Cannons possessing several matchwinners of their own, including Kade Mueller who has averaged 22.5 disposals this season and is draft eligible in 2023.

Paul Pascu has also enjoyed a standout season for Calder.

“They’ll be up for the fight so we need to be on top of our game,” Webberley said.

While the Devils are hoping to see as many of their current crop of players drafted, Webberley admits the entire program is about lifting the game in Tasmania.

“We want to make sure everyone enjoys it,” he said.

“Whatever level these players go on to it’s about giving them the tools to succeed. If someone can even go back to Tasmania community footy and be a strong leader, we will believe we’ve had a strong impact.”
