NAB League: Charlotte Baskaran, Montana Ham star for the Western Jets

Two Western Jets stars played the “best games” their coach had seen after they combined for 70 disposals in a big win but it wasn’t the most pleasing aspect.

The Western Jets’ dynamic duo are in ominous form.

Charlotte Baskaran (38 disposals) and Montana Ham (32 disposals) combined for 70 touches on Saturday to lead their side to their first NAB League Girls win over the season.

Aberfeldie product Baskaran also kicked a goal while it could have been a much bigger day for Keilor’s Ham who finished with four behinds.

The Jets ran out 15-point winners over the Northern Knights.

Their performances left coach Robbie Chancellor stunned.

“It was probably the best game I’ve seen both girls play,” he said.

“They’re two outstanding young girls who have worked hard to put themselves in this position and it’s exciting to see them put together this type of form so early in the season.

“I think it’s even more enjoyable for them as well because they’re such close friends.

“Charlotte has had back-to-back games over 30 disposals which is really impressive. Montana was probably a little down in our first game against Tasmania but I don’t think we could have asked for a better response from her.

“One of the best parts about their form is they’re lifting the younger girls in the playing group.”

The Jets were able to assert their dominance in the middle of the ground largely thanks to the performances of Baskaran and Ham but there were several other impressive performers across the field.

Trinity Skenderis (23 disposals), Paige Ryan (20) and Stephanie Asciak (18) all found plenty of footy across the ground.

Meanwhile, ruck Krystal Russell backed up a strong showing in the first game of the season with 23 hit-outs and 10 touches.

Young gun Lou-Lou Field, 15, took another step forward in her development in defence finishing the game with 16 disposals.

“Our depth is really starting to come together which is the most pleasing thing for me,” Chancellor said.

“The girls really impressed me with how they were able to bounce back from a loss. Our defensive pressure was fantastic again and I couldn’t be happier because it’s an area of our game we worked on heavily during pre-season.”

The Jets will travel to take on the Greater Western Victoria Rebels in their next game.
