Replay: NAB League - Geelong Falcons v Oakleigh Chargers

Geelong have battled back from a 15-point three-quarter time deficit to edge out Oakleigh Chargers in a game befitting their NAB League heavyweight status.

The Falcons led at the end of the first and second quarters but a huge 39-point third-quarter move from the Chargers seemed to completely change momentum entering the final term.

Down by 15 points, Geelong hit back strongly and took the lead midway through the term before absorbing plenty of pressure to sneak home by two points, 73-71.

PREVIEW: Falcons, Chargers showcase AFL’s exciting future

The level of talent in this weekend’s NAB League clash between the Geelong Falcons and Oakleigh Chargers is simply astounding.

Both sides will feature players who are tipped to feature prominently in AFL Draft discussions for the rest of the year until their names are possibly called in November.

The game at Ballarat’s Mars Stadium on Saturday could also have huge finals ramifications with Oakleigh sitting second with Geelong just half a game back in third.

Among the players to watch will be Falcons onballer Jhye Clark, who caught the eye in last week’s AFL Academy game against Collingwood VFL.

He finished with 19 disposals and six tackles.

Geelong talent manager Tom Lonergan said he hoped it sparked a strong run of form for Clark.

“He’s had a bit of a stop-start beginning to the season and I thought he did really well last week,” he said.

“Of all the players, he had some of the lowest amount of game time so he showed he knows how to find the footy, which is always important as a midfielder.

“I think if he can get a bit of continuity in his game he will play his best footy in the back half of the season.”

While the Chargers might have a different looking side to previous weeks due to school footy commitments, their line-up will still feature some exciting prospects.

That includes big man Ben Woodfull who has played seven VFL games for Williamstown this season.

The 19-year-old returned to NAB League level last weekend and recorded 17 disposals, 12 hit outs and a goal in the win over Tasmania.

“We’ve been really happy with how he’s been going,” Oakleigh talent lead Jy Bond said.

AFL Academy member Luke Teal is also expected to be named for his second Chargers game of the season.

He will join the Kynan Brown and Tom Bower in the side who made their debuts last weekend.

Kynan is a father-son prospect for Melbourne in the 2023 AFL Draft with his father, Nathan, playing 146 games for the Dees.

Tom is the son of former Richmond defender Nathan, who played 74 games for the Tigers.

“Kynan had a very good debut,” Bond said.

“Then Tom was in the thick of the action with three goals, including the match winner with about 30 seconds to go.”

Both clubs over-age players will also be able to stake their final claim for a spot on an AFL list ahead of next Wednesday’s mid-season draft.

Among them is Geelong’s Euriah Hollard who has averaged 16 disposals and kicked nine goals in the elite junior competition this season.

“He’s been impressive along with all of our 19-year-olds,” Lonergan said.

“He played in the Young Guns game against the Vic Metro and Country under 18s side which shows the regard he is held in.”

The round 8 clash will mark the return of a full set of NAB League fixtures for the first time since the start of May.

During his time, teams have only played one game over the past three weeks.

It has allowed players to get back to their community clubs.

“The feedback we’ve received is it’s something the boys have really enjoyed,” Lonergan said.

“Then some have gone onto get a taste of VFL footy as well which is only going to further their development.”
