Eastern Ranges will be put to the immediate test when it takes on Sandringham Dragons this Saturday at RSEA Park, but it feels this list can compete with any.
Here is a player-by-player breakdown of the finalised Eastern Ranges 2023 Boys squad.
Matthew Aldous (Templestowe/North Melbourne VFL)
A 19-year-old that has a VFL contract with North Melbourne, meaning he will only be available for the first four or five games. A hard-working lead up forward with nice skills.
Cody Anderson (Healesville)
A mature bottom-aged player that came last year and played some fantastic footy as a 16-year-old. He’s played a lot of senior footy for Healesville in the Outer East competition.
Jack Baldwin (Mitcham)
A defender that will take the second or third forward. He’s developed a lot so far this pre-season as a bottom-age player.
Noah Bourke (Vermont)
Son of Vermont champion Danny, Noah is a player that can play anywhere. After spending his pre-season forward of centre, he delivered a slick performance down back in a practice game last weekend.
Ry Cantwell (Nth Ringwood)
Cantwell arrived at the Ranges late last year and showed his upside immediately. He will play as a high half-forward this season. He stands at 186cm and has strong athletic traits.
Jeremy Clark (East Ringwood)
A silky small-forward – with a great left-foot – that reads the drop of the ball remarkably. The Ranges aren’t short of talented small forwards and he is one of them.
Joshua Davies (Vermont)
Davies played last year as a small defender, but a strong pre-season will see him work his way up the ground. A smooth moving left-footer with a big tank.
Oscar Dunn (Vermont)
A fantastic athlete that stands at around 194cm. The Ranges will look to play him behind the footy as a defender early on.
Harry Flynn (Nth Ringwood/Collingwood VFL)
Flynn has been juggling footy and playing Premier Cricket for Ringwood. A smart, strongly built player that can play as an inside midfielder but also across half-back.
Joshua Galstians (Park Orchards)
Returning from a foot injury, Galstians won’t be available early but when he returns will play on a rotation as a mid-forward. A well-balanced player that can win his own footy.
Mitchell Gamel (Lysterfield)
Currently recovering from a broken wrist but will likely play a role as a defender when he returns this season. A bottom-age kid with a lot of potential.
Liam George (Mooroolbark)
A natural midfielder but his versatility could see him land on a wing or a flank. He is highly respected among the group but will miss some games to play under Matthew Lloyd at Haileybury.
Joshua Goldie (Mitcham)
After missing out on the under-16s carnival game through injury, Goldie has come back with a point to prove. He has pace to burn running down the wing but isn’t shoehorned to an outside role
Lachlan Guymer (Warrandyte)
Guymer has developed his craft playing a ton of senior footy for Warrandyte. He attacks the footy hard and has a neat left-foot.
Jordan Hider (Vermont)
One of the Ranges’ biggest improvers over the summer. A hard but clean player that knows where the goals are.
Oliver Horlock (Vermont)
Similar to Harry Flynn, Horlock has missed a bit of pre-season with cricket duties but shows plenty of promise. He will be brought back in over the next couple of weeks where he will play the high half-forward role.
Brayden LaPlanche (Rowville)
One of the Ranges’ dual captains who is also a part of the Metro squad. An explosive player who will play as the second or third tall, while also holding the weapons to play through the middle.
Remy MacLean (East Ringwood)
MacLean has come from the clouds and impressed immediately. He has excellent closing speed for a player that stands around 195cm. He will play as a key defender this season.
Seth McDonald (Lysterfield)
Linked up with three or four weeks left in the pre-season as a bottom-age product and has performed strongly. He will get some opportunities throughout the year to set him up next season.
Zac McGown (Warrandyte)
A sound defender who will grab the second or third forward. A Yarra Valley Grammar prospect who may miss a fair chunk of the year with school footy. A 2024 draft hopeful.
James Menzies (Norwood)
A developing forward-ruck that is improving his ability to play dual position.
Lachlan Monteath (Ferntree Gully)
Another ruck stock player that is a fierce competitor. He’s only been in the system over the summer but has made great steps forward.
Jackson Mooney (Nth Ringwood)
Mooney is a very coachable kid with the way he presents himself and trains, always getting the best out of his footy. He’s a versatile player that is hard at the ball.
Christian Moraes (Rowville)
A talented bottom-age player that has an uncanny ability to find the footy. A contested player that spreads from the contest to link up on the outside.
Joshua Morris (Lysterfield)
One of the Ranges’ key-forwards who is returning from a shoulder injury. He competes well in the air and can take a strong contested mark.
Cam Nyko (Healesville)
One of the more draftable players out of Eastern, Nyko is hard and competitive but also has the polish on the outside with both feet. One of the ones to watch out for at the end of the year.
Jak Ryan (Woori Yallock)
The exciting small showed he is capable of mixing it with the bigger bodies when playing a chunk of senior footy for Woori Yallock last season. He was one of the Tigers’ best in the Outer East grand final against Narre Warren.
Josh Smillie (Park Orchards)
Smillie will be a highly rated product next season as a big-bodied midfielder that can go forward, take a mark and hit the scoreboard. He stands at 194cm.
Iliro Smit (Montrose)
A Hawthorn Next Generation Academy player that has recently had knee surgery after injuring himself while training with the Hawks. The ruck is expected to return in May.
Baylin Spencer (Woori Yallock)
Spencer is a fast and strong athlete that has really improved over the last six weeks. Despite being a bottom-ager, he will get his opportunities in the engine room this year.
Tyson Sruk (Rowville)
A no-fuss team player that will play as a rebounding defender in his top-age season this year, demonstrating his main strength – his ball use.
Isaac Tanzimat (East Ringwood)
The mid-sized forward has strong leading patterns and kicks truly when given the chance in front of goal.
Joshua Tovey (Park Orchards)
One of the Ranges’ captains, Tovey played as a lockdown defender last year but will play with a bit more freedom to run and rebound this season.
Cooper Trembath (Park Orchards)
The biggest improver on the track this pre-season, Trembath has done a mountain of work to get himself extremely fit. He shaved over a minute off his 2km time trial this pre-season. A natural ruck-forward that will learn how to play as a defender this season.
Clay Tucker (Rowville/Box Hill)
The ruck returns as a 19-year-old having played a couple of games with Box Hill in the VFL. He played forward and kicked a couple of goals as a forward in the Ranges’ practice game last weekend.
Zach Tulloch (Lysterfield)
Another developing ruck that will work on his craft in his bottom-age year. Eastern is hoping his progress will continue along as a longer-term prospect.
William Verrell (Lysterfield)
Brother of Caleb, who was the Ranges’ captain last year, Will is a midfielder at local footy but will play as a small defender at Coates Talent League level this year.
Jacob Vippond (Blackburn)
Vippond came into the program late but has shown his speed, endurance and attack on the footy. He will get some opportunities as a small forward or defender this season.
Nicholas Watson (Montrose)
A powerful and exciting player that lacks flaws. He stands at 169cm but has the ability to take a big mark. He is one of the Ranges’ top prospects for the draft this year.
Riley Weatherill (East Ringwood)
A great leader who has a great set of hands when leading out at full forward. He asserted himself well in a practice game at the weekend.
Cameron West (Norwood)
West is a developing defender who is a really good size and athletically sound. His output is progressing nicely as a bottom-age player.
Riley White (Park Orchards)
White has been another big improver over the pre-season and will likely play down back.
Luke Wilson (Vermont)
A smart, small defender that played Vic Metro under-16s last season but has had an interrupted pre-season with a foot injury.
Blair Wilson (Olinda Ferny Creek)
Wilson’s sister Charlotte plays at Melbourne in the AFLW and he shares similar traits. A great athlete that has pace to burn and is a good size to play on mid-sized forwards.
Caleb Windsor (Lysterfield)
Windsor is a silky player that is quick and can maintain that speed for a long time. Has silky skills with ball in hand, typically on the wing or at half-back. He isn’t shy of taking a bounce or two when in open space.
Lincoln Wright (Norwood)
Wright has just moved to Norwood after playing all of his juniors out at Emerald. The developing tall forward-ruck pieced together a really strong performance at the weekend against the Western Jets in the ruck.
Cameron Zani (Vermont)
A developing key forward that is learning to play in the ruck. He is currently sidelined with a fracture in his foot but will likely return at the back end of the season.
