Tyabb’s bid to move up the MPNFL Division 2 ladder has received a mighty boost with the recruitment of Frankston Bombers key position star Corey Buchan.
“He’s coming home!!!!,” Tyabb declared on its Facebook page.
Buchan, 29, was a Tyabb junior who debuted in the seniors in 2009 as a 17-year-old.
He won the TAC Cup leading goal kicking award in 2010 after a sizzling season with Dandenong Stingrays.
Buchan went on to excel at VFL level with the Frankston Dolphins where he was an integral part of their leadership group.
More recently he has been a leading player at the Frankston Bombers in MPNFL Division 1, this year kicking 22 goals in 12 games.
New Tyabb coach Anthony Agius said Buchan’s signature was pivotal in the Yabbies’ resurgence.
“It’s a fantastic,” Agius said.
“It’s almost a coup for Tyabb to get someone of his calibre.
“He’s a fantastic person and a great player.’’
Tyabb has also signed Jake Anderson, back from Poowong, and Mornington defender-wingman Chris Harris.
Agius said more signings are to come.
Tyabb finished on the bottom of the ladder this year, winning only one game.
Agius said the Yabbies would rebuild, step by step, and securing quality recruits was vital.
“We’re financially strong, we’ve got a great committee, we’re strong off field and ultimately all we need is a few of these people to say, ‘yeah, I’ll give you a shot, no worries, let’s build something’,” he said.
Agius said he’s made a stack of phone calls chasing recruits since being appointed coach last month.
“It’s been constant,” he said.
“I’ve also had to work hard internally to keep players. I’m mean, I’m up for it, it’s been great, that’s what I took the job for.
“First year in I don’t expect great things, I just want to take Tyabb to a better place initially, and then they will come.
“That’s my theory.
“It’s great being back involved in footy.”
