An open and honest Aaron Pacey admitted he’d run his race at Tyabb.

After four years as Yabbies’ coach, he stepped down this week.

“I don’t think I could take the group any further from where we are now,’’ he said.

Four MPNFL coaches have stepped down in the past month, the others being Steve Hamill (Crib Point), Neil Craig (Devon Meadows) and James Brain (Chelsea).

Tyabb managed only one win from 12 games in the stop-start 2021 season.

The Yabbies had gone into the season confident of pushing for finals after recruiting strongly but they never clicked.

Pacey says he walks away better for the experience.

“Look, there’s been a lot of different elements and factors,’’ Pacey said.

“There’s been some good stuff, there’s been some bad stuff and it’s been tough in a lot of different ways but it’s been a great learning curve for everyone involved as well.

“But I said to the club, ‘realistically I don’t think I am capable of taking them any further’.

“I said, ‘what you need right now is a new voice and a spark from somebody else’.’’

Pacey was appointed Tyabb coach in late 2017 after captaining Skye in Southern league for eight seasons.

In his first season in charge, he improved the Yabbies markedly, guiding them to six wins, including victories over Chelsea and Somerville.

The Yabbies had four wins in 2019.

Pacey said it was now time for him to focus more on his young family and they are planning a caravan trip around Australia.

As for football, he doesn’t intend to play next season and will pursue another sport.

“I’ve actually been doing a bit of training and I might have a crack at an Ironman next year,’’ he said.

“I did a half (Ironman) at the start of this year down in Geelong.

“So I’ll concentrate on that, get and healthy again and see what happens after that.’’
