Sorrento forward Leigh Poholke says there’s irony in how he sustained a badly broken arm against Bonbeach last week.
He snapped the radius and ulna bones while...tackling.
“Tackling...that’s what you get,” Poholke said, with tongue firmly in cheek.
“I’ve avoided it for 10 years and all of a sudden it becomes part of the team rule, you know, everyone must tackle. And you get unlucky.”
Poholke said he heard the “crunch and snap” as he swung an opposition player, his arm getting caught up.
He was immediately into the rooms and given a “green whistle” by the doctor to alleviate the pain.
“I don’t know what we did before those green whistles,” he said.
“I was very glad the doc was there to sort that out for me because once the adrenalin did wear off it became quite sore.”
Poholke, who has kicked over 500 goals for Sorrento, underwent surgery to have two 15cm plates inserted as well as eight screws in each bone.
He’s been told he will miss 10-12 weeks, at least, but isn’t giving up hope of playing again this season.
“It takes me to round 18,” he said.
“At least I’ll be able to run, I’ll be able to get fit.
“The trainers at the club are already having their fun, saying, ‘at least you’ll be able to run’.”
While sidelined Poholke will help out on the Sorrento bench on match days, his knowledge of the Sharks players sure to be vital as the Sorras look to challenge again for the flag.
“I’ll stand on the bench with Ryan Potter and Jack Falck and just get in the way and be a nuisance for them,” Poholke said.
“And help out Tappy (coach Luke Tapscott).”
Sorrento has been hit hard by injuries this season, although there is some good news with former AFL player Will Johnson set to return through the reserves this week after missing seven weeks with a calf injury.
Will Tucker, Angus Callaghan and Nathan Ryan are also due back in the next few weeks for the 3-3 Sorras.
