MPNFL 2021: Sorrento signs Liam Frazer and Imo Jackson

Sorrento has added more dash with a three-time EFL premiership player and a young excitement machine signing on.

Having already secured delisted Adelaide Crow Myles Poholke, Sorrento has now added an experienced premiership player from the Eastern Football League.

Liam Frazer, a key member of Balwyn’s 2012, 2015 and 2016 flag-winning sides, has joined the Sharks after moving into the area for work.

An osteopath, he’s working at Beachside Back and Body in Rosebud.

“He’s a solid local footballer, played at senior level his whole career and won three flags, so he will be a handy pick up…he fell in our lap sort of thing,” Sorrento vice president Anthony Ring said.

Frazer has pace and endurance and looks set to play on a wing or off half back for Sorrento.

“I’m sure you’ll see him dashing up and down the wing,” Ring said.

Sorrento has also welcomed back the talented Imo Jackson, a former club junior who has been playing at Aberfeldie where he captained the U18s to a flag, starred in two other flags and also won an U18 and reserves best and fairest award.

Ring said Jackson is a clever half back flanker who has injected energy at training.

“He’s got that flair about him, picking the ball up and spinning out of tackles,” he said.

“It’s pretty exciting stuff at training.

“An X factor, you might call him.”

Sorrento has secured a strong list of recruits as it looks to atone for successive grand final defeats in 2018 and ‘19.

Former Melbourne midfielder Luke Tapscott is coaching the Sharks again, declaring he has “unfinished business’’.

All eyes will be on Myles Poholke, who returns to his junior club after playing 16 AFL games across four seasons for Adelaide.

Sorrento has also signed former St Kilda player Will Johnson, who played one AFL game in 2011.

Old Trinity defender Jake Steinhart is another Sorrento recruit, having joined the club before the 2020 season that never happened.

Steinhart played over 130 games with Old Trinity in the VAFA, winning a best and fairest.

He also spent time in the VFL with Casey and Richmond.

Importantly, Sorrento will field an Under 19s side this season.

“That’s our future,” Ring said.

“I think it’s a bit of a blessing for us having the year off because the 19s have now realised they love footy. I think they realise that footy is actually a lot of fun.”

Sorrento will play Vermont in a practice match next week (March 13) before travelling on the ferry to Queenscliff for the annual Battle of the Rip the following week.
