MPNFL 2021: Brett Deledio kicks two goals in Devon Meadows win over Hastings

Brett Deledio’s second appearance for Devon Meadows in the MPNFL was overshadowed by a dynamic display by a teammate.

All eyes were again on Brett Deledio.

But big Jordan Smale stole the show as Devon Meadows beat Hastings to bank its third win in its past four games in MPNFL Division 2.

Smale, the former Mt Eliza and Keysborough key forward, fired off four goals in the opening quarter as the Panthers hurried to a 21-point lead at Glover Reserve.

Although the Smale show was cut short when he did his hamstring early in the second quarter, his impact was significant.

He sat on the bench for the rest of the game as Devon Meadows won 11.9 (75) to 7.15 (57) to improve its record 4-2 and climb to fourth spot.

Devon Meadows coach Neil Craig said Smale looked a million bucks before straining his hammy.

“He’s a big brute of a man,” he said.

“We’ve just been working to getting him right. He’s as strong as a Mallee bull and as fit as one, too.

“He’s going to be real good for us at centre half-forward.”

Craig said the Panthers wanted to make a fast start against Hastings and their 5.1 to 1.4 first term was pleasing.

“We’ve been coming out of the blocks really poorly, so we made it a real focus to start well,” Craig said.

“We’re getting there with the mental side of the game, too.”

Former Richmond and GWS star Deledio, playing his second and probably last game for the club, slotted two goals and played a leading role in the win.

“He gave us a bit forward and then went on the ball in the last quarter, he was good,” Craig said.

“He was good around the club again. Terrific.

“It (having him) was a great boost for the club, both financially and on the field.’’

The Hillis brothers, Joel and Rory, were named as Devon Meadows’ best players, while Patty Boland, Leigh Craig and Stef Baumgartner also impressed.

Mat Fletcher has had his issues with groin injuries but he got through the game unscathed, and played well.

Devon Meadows tackles Karingal, which has won its past two games, on Saturday.

The Bulls beat Crib Point on the weekend, 18.7 (115) to 10.12 (72), with Sam Glenn kicking four goals and Laughlin Cowell, Ash Cadd, Tom Curren, Jordan Pomeroy and Scott Jansen leading the way.
