It was a win — and a discovery at the same time.
Hastings unearthed two exciting forwards as it held off Crib Point by 13 points in MPNFL Division 2 on Saturday.
New signings Rhys Wilkinson and Brayde Bosman kicked seven goals between them as the Blues won 14.7 (91) to 11.12 (78) to open their 2022 account.
Former Frankston YCW half forward Wilkinson slotted four goals and was named best-on-ground.
“He was in everything,’’ Hastings coach Clint Einsiedel said.
“He’s a pretty classy young player and is definitely one to watch.’’
Bosman, who was coached by Einsiedel at Trafalgar and also had a stint with Warragul Industrials, set the Blues alight early, kicking three goals.
“He looked like he was going to tear the game apart,’’ Einsiedel said.
“He was pretty impressive to be honest.’’
Einsiedel also poured praise on dashing young wingman Nic Xerri. “He runs all day and does all the basic right,’’ he said of the first season player.
Little separated the sides all game, with Crib Point making a surge in the second quarter only for Hastings to answer.
“It was an arm wrestle,’’ Einsiedel said.
“Crib Point in the second quarter really put us to the sword.
“We were lucky to kick away early in the last quarter and hold a margin.
“We’re young…it was good for the players’ confidence to be able to fight it out and win.
“I think as the year goes on we’ll get better. There will be ups and downs…but the signs are pretty healthy. There are a few of the young guys who are playing quite well, even early in the year.’’
Hastings’ more experienced men also were influential, especially Luke Hewitt and Nathan Gray in the second half and Jake Hewitt in the first half.
Aaron Vinson and Taylor Stratton also impressed.
In other games:
Pearcedale’s star recruit Ryan Bastinac racked up 45 touches and kicked three goals as the Dales thrashed Tyabb by 102 points, 26.10 (166) to 8.14 (62) at Tractor Park.
The floodgates opened in the last quarter as Pearcedale kicked 11 goals in the last 30 minutes. Kaolan Thornton, Jordan Bastinac and Jack McGuiness also ran rampant, while Jayden Cole and Cruiz West booted four goals apiece.
The undefeated Dales sit second on the ladder with a percentage of 202.44.
Bastinac lives in Brisbane but flies in for Pearcedale’s game each week.
Langwarrin bolted away from Chelsea in the second half to win 13.11 (89) to 3.4 (22), with Dromana premiership midfielder Josh Bateman being named best-on-ground. Blake Peach, Nick Tuddenham and Josh Dormer also dominated.
Devon Meadows turned a four-point half-time deficit into a runaway win over Karingal, 12.11 (83) to 4.9 (33).
Joel Hillas kicked four goals and Brandon White was clearly best-afield after racking up big disposal numbers and was awarded the game’s MVP.
Ryan Koo at half back and ruckman Brayden Haynes also impressed for the Panthers, who responded well after losing to Pearcedale last week.
“Our effort this week compared to last week was completely different,’’ Devon Meadows coach Ryan Hendy said.
“If we bring that effort most weeks we will be in most games I’d imagine.’’
Somerville got on top of Seaford in the last quarter to score a 31-point win, 12.19 (91) to 8.12 (60).
Luke Burton, Jake Haskett, Tom Roberts, Daniel Marshall and Travis Finn, who slotted three goals, were among the Eagles’ best.
Mornington kicked the only six goals of the first half to set up a comfortable 29-point win over Rye, 12.12 (84) to 7.13 (55), under lights on Saturday night.
Matt Caine kicked four goals and Will Goosey three, while Adrian Speedy and ruck recruit Riley Welsh were outstanding for the Bulldogs.
