MPNFL: Ryan Bastinac hurts ankle in Pearcedale’s win over Tyabb in Division 2

An injury to arguably the best player in the comp, Goosey’s goal haul for Mornington and Rye’s vital win…Round 11 was full of news.

They held their collective breath as he writhed on the ground clutching his ankle.

Pearcedale star Ryan Bastinac landed awkwardly from a marking contest in the second quarter against Tyabb at Bunguyan Reserve on Saturday.

He was taken from the field and didn’t take any further part in the game as the Dales won by 17 points, 12.8 (80) to 9.9 (63).

On Monday, Pearcedale coach Peter Bastinac gave an update on his son’s ankle: “It’s pretty swollen, still. The next couple of days will be clearer understanding.”

The former North Melbourne and Brisbane player has been brilliant this season as Pearcedale, with seven wins from 11 games, has emerged as a finals contender for the first time in a decade.

On Saturday, Jordan Bastinac, Jake Frawley and Kaolan Thornton were key figures in Pearcedale’s win over an improving Tyabb.

Huw Jones, Connor Benwell and Archie McGuiness were also among the Dales’ best players.

For Tyabb, former VFL player Corey Buchan and co-captains Brad Williams and Will Hose were best.

In other games:

*Mornington kept its finals hopes alive with a stirring 20-point win over Devon Meadows, 15.4 (94) to 10.4 (74), at Glover Reserve.

William Goosey slotted six goals straight to play a starring role as the 5-6 Bulldogs made it four wins in their past five games.

Mornington coach Simon Goosey said his 26-year-old son William presented well and kicked accurately.

“We rotate it a bit so you’re not relying on any one player up forward,” he said.

“It was his turn this week…we don’t want to be too predictable.”

Goosey also praised rookie defender Angus Rowler, who did an excellent job on Devon Meadows’ former AFL player Brandon White.

“He beat him in one on ones,” Goosey said.

“I was rapt with him. It’s his first year of senior football, he’s always at the club doing extras on a Monday night and that shows how good he can be.”

Ruckman Ryan Smith made his senior debut in the absence of the injured Riley Welsh and impressed.

“He competed really well, took a few nice marks and kicked a goal,” Goosey said of Smith.

“I was rapt with how he did because he’s a very skilled big fella. He’s got all the skills.”

Harry Bould, Corey Ash and William Lewis were also among Mornington’s best, while Perry Lewis-Smith made his first appearance for the season and did well off half back.

Goosey said his side was “starting to get a bit of belief”.

“We’ve got some depth into the place, we’ve got a few players who will come back…it all adds up and helps,” he said.

*Rye held off Crib Point by 12 points, 11.16 (82) to 10.10 (70), in what Demons coach Adam Kirkwood described as “just a really good game of local footy”.

“We came out and played a really good first quarter, we were up by 30 something points at quarter time, and then Crib Point did the same thing to us in the second quarter,” Kirkwood said.

“It was good to see some of our younger names, the next generation, stepping up and playing well. Matt Hill had another really good game, Kalani Ryan, Jarrod Richards, they’re all starting to make themselves known as good players in our side and in the comp.”

Rye’s best also included James Nevinson, Peter Hampton, Chance Bobridge, Josh Gana and Fraser Sanford, who kicked three goals.

Andrew Dean kicked four goals to move to 47 for the season.

Kirkwood said Rye was still aiming to play finals.

“We’re hoping to string a few (wins) together on the run home and see what can happen but we know everything has to go right for us to make it,” he said.

*Daniel Marshall and Ben Sedgwick booted three goals apiece in Somerville’s 20-point win over Hastings, 9.12 (66) to 7.4 (46).

Lachlan Williams, Luke Burton, Harrison Paul, Jack Moroney and Liam Gruar were also in the Eagles’ best.

*Langwarrin unleashed a sizzling 8.2 to 0.1 opening quarter to set up its 64-point win over Karingal, 17.9 (111) to 7.5 (47).

Zach Andrewartha turned in yet another best afield display for the Kangaroos, who also were superbly led by Nichols Hammill, Joel Bateman, Sean Herdman, Mitchell Cuthbert and young ruckman Jyelin Moli.
