A boost for the Bulldogs.
Mornington has signed former VAFA and St Arnaud key position player Angus Grant as it tries to resurrect its 2022 campaign in MPNFL Division 2.
The strong-marking Grant is likely to play up forward for the Bulldogs, who have lost five games in a row to sit in 10th spot with a 1-5 record.
“He’ll straighten us up,” Mornington coach Simon Goosey said.
“He’s a key position player, he presents well, he’s a strong bugger, he’s been training with us and he’s got good hands.
“He can play key back, too.”
Grant, a former Peninsula Old Boys player, has been training with Mornington in recent weeks and will play this Saturday against Chelsea at Alexandra Park.
Mornington lost its leading goal kicker Jackson Calder, who is playing with Aaron Davey’s Cairns City Lions this season, and the Bulldogs have been restricted to 12, 11, 11, 7, 8 and 9 goals in their six games so far.
Goosey said the Bulldogs would regain a string of key players this week, with A-grader Nathan Heath and ruckman Riley Welsh, who were both late outs last weekend, set to return.
Centre half-back Tyler Hobson is also expected back in the side.
Goosey said star recruit Perry Lewis-Smith was also close to playing after a hip injury.
“We get a heap back this week,” Goosey said.
“We’ve got up to five senior players to come back.”
Goosey said Mornington had been close to banking more wins this season and can put its finals quest back on track.
“We’re not far away,” he said.
