Former Frankston Dolphins captain Shane Hockey is set to make a surprise return to the MPNFL after answering an SOS from winless Mornington.

The 31-year-old is living in Perth but will fly in and out for up to five games with the Bulldogs, who are striving to avoid relegation for the first time in their 131-year history.

“He retired from the WAFL last year. He will play maybe five games,” Mornington coach Simon Goosey said.

Hockey was a tough and talented midfielder for the Dolphins before heading west and being a star performer for South Fremantle, winning a best and fairest in his first year at the club.

Goosey coached him at Mornington and Frankston and said it would be great to have him back at Mornington where he played before going to the VFL.

“He was one of my favourites,” Goosey said.

“He’s a Mornington boy and he said he’d only play for South Freo, Mornington or the Dolphins.

“He said that’s where his heart is. He misses family from over here.”

Mornington will also regain star forward Dale Whelan from injury next month in another boost to its bid to stay in the top bracket.

The Bulldogs have been hit hard by injuries this season, with captain Chris Baker and Ryan Smith suffering season ending leg injuries last month.
