Rosebud took a huge step towards reaching the MPNFL Division 1 finals when it edged Frankston YCW by six points at Olympic Reserve on Saturday.
The Buds’ 10.6 (66) to 8.12 (60) victory lifted them to fifth spot, a game ahead of sixth-placed YCW.
Four games remain.
Rosebud kicked the first four goals of the game and, crucially, two goals into the wind in the second term, to lead by 27 points at the last change before YCW mounted a late challenge.
The Stonecats kicked the only three goals of the last term but with best-on-ground Sean Downie standing tall, Rosebud held on to improve its record to 7-7.
Daniel Lewis was the Buds’ main destroyer in front of goals, slotting three, while Keegan Downie, Anthony Pegg, Fletcher Hustwaite and Seb Krumeich were influential.
For Frankston YCW, Matt La Fontaine, Lachlan Williams, Lachlan Wallace and Josh Berenger tried hard.
YCW lost key midfielder Kyle Hutchison to a heavy concussion early in the first quarter.
Frankston YCW coach Wayne Capp said his side would fight hard to win back its spot in the top five in the last month of the season.
“We’ve just got to control what we can control and that’s making sure we win games and see what happens around us but we’re still in the fight, that’s the main thing,’’ Capp said.
Second-placed Sorrento bounced back from its loss to Dromana last week by beating Edi-Asp 102-64.
“We definitely learnt our lesson last week,’’ Sorrento coach Luke Tapscott said.
“We had 22 good contributors yesterday instead of just a few last week. That was the most pleasing thing out of the game.’’
Best-on-ground Mitch Hallahan, despite being tagged, racked up possessions in the midfield.
Shannon Gladman also played a key role in midfield and hit the scoreboard when he went forward, while Josh Iezzi capped an excellent game with four goals and some strong contested marks.
Tapscott said the Sharks reset their goals during the week.
“I think that loss (to Dromana) last week seemed to really wake us up, it gave the boys a bit of a reality check,’’ he said.
Dromana kicked four goals into the wind in the last quarter to pip Mt Eliza at Madsen Reserve.
With brilliant small forward Sam Fowler running rampant, the Tigers found another gear to turn a 14-point three quarter-time deficit into a rousing six-point win, 12.6 (78) to 10.12 (72).
Mt Eliza could only manage one goal in the last term.
Fowler finished with four goals while his equally dangerous off sider Ethan Johnstone kicked three, and Beau Cosson two. Terry Wheeler, Rohan Bleeker, Billy Geurts and Sam Geurts were other key figures in the win, which consolidates third spot for Dromana (10-4).
Mt Eliza lost Blaine Coates in the opening seconds of the game when his jaw was rattled in a heavy collision. The Redlegs’ best were Aaron Jackson (two goals), Finlay Bayne, Ryan McGannon and Ethan Park.
Pines extended its winning streak to six with a gripping one-point win over the Frankston Bombers, 6.11 (47) to 6.10 (46), at Greg Beck Oval.
The Pythons were kept scoreless in the opening quarter as the Bombers, with Jarrad Grant booting three goals, zoomed to a 28-point lead.
But Pines hit back, with Beau Hendry, Luke Potts and Jon Hughes leading the way. Khyal Jacobson kicked three timely goals from the midfield.
For the Bombers, Brett Sutton, Zac White, Dale Sutton and Ryan Marks-Logan tried hard.
Bonbeach saw off bottom side Mornington by 69 points, 15.12 (102) to 4.9 (33). The Sharks set up victory with a seven-goal second quarter as Ben McLean, Trent Dennis-Lane, Shane McDonald and Lachlan Stenning ran hot. Dennis-Lane fired off six goals and McDonald four.

*Pines coach Paddy Swayn will be back in charge of his side in Round 16 against Dromana after having his seven-game suspension for abusing an umpire reduced to three on appeal.
Swayn said the saga would only galvanise the Pythons.
“This will not define us, this will unite us,’’ he said.
“We’re a pretty tight group anyway.’’
