Karingal coach Brendan Dunne says his side needs to be more aggressive after being handed a comprehensive 26-point defeat by Langwarrin in the MPNFL Division 2 qualifying final on Saturday.
“We looked a little bit slow and timid yesterday,’’ Dunne said after Langwarrin won 9.16 (70) to 6.8 (44) at Somerville.
“I wasn’t too happy with that side of it. We pride ourselves on being a tough footy side and I thought yesterday we were pretty soft. We need to have a crack next week.’’
Karingal’s season is now on the line in this weekend’s first semi-final.
Langwarrin, though, is one win away from a grand final berth. The Kangaroos will face minor premier Red Hill in a second semi-final at Chelsea on Saturday.
With best-on-ground Jarryd Amalfi providing dash and power, Langy led at every change, icing the game early in the last quarter when Joel Bateman slotted a goal.
“Big Red’’ Matt Naughton was a dominant figure in the ruck for the Kangaroos and Karingal, without Grant Goodall, who broke his collarbone last month, struggled to contain him.
Luke Churcher, Mitch Cuthbert, Blake Peach, Tim McGenniss and Sean Herdman also impressed for Langwarrin, while Matt Peynenborg (three goals) and Levi Hughes (two) were lively near goals.
Karingal’s best were Brandon Wapshott, Michael Burke and David Hirst.
Dunne rated Langwarrin as “probably the best ball use side in the comp’’.
“I reckon they’re better than Red Hill, so if you allow them to have loose men they’re going to use the footy really well,’’ he said.
Somerville lived to fight another day after defeating Chelsea by 16 points, 9.12 (66) to 5.20 (50), in the elimination final at Mornington on Sunday.
In wintry conditions, the Eagles set up victory with a five-goal-to-one third quarter to surge 28 points ahead at the last change after trailing by two points at halftime.
Daniel Marshall booted two of his three goals off the ground and Jed Sutton provided dash and class.
Paul Fermanis, Ryan Gillis, Kane McKenzie, Mark Stevens, Jack Barbour, Nick Mason and Jesse Walker-Swain were also prominent in the win for Somerville.
