Bonbeach coach Steve Hughes has hailed his side’s blistering 58-1 opening quarter against Frankston YCW in the MPNFL Division 1 elimination final on Sunday as its best term in five years.

Hunting the football with relentless pressure, the savage Sharks slammed on 9.4 to 0.1 to set up a 55-point victory at Rye.

And it came just a week after Frankston YCW had thrashed Bonbeach by 52 points in the final round of the season.

“What can you say?’’ Hughes said.

“Everything you want to happen in 30 minutes of footy basically did.

“Our pressure was outstanding, we hunted the footy, we worked hard, kicked the ball well, there was terrific energy around our forward line, yeah, we just put it all together in 30 minutes – and the rest was history. We set it all up in that first half hour.

“It’s probably the best quarter in five years I would have thought. You don’t do that to Frankston YCW often.’’

Hughes said the motivation to respond to the previous week’s loss and knowing it was all on the line, a now or never scenario, drove his players.

“Without going into too much detail about our pre-game there was a theme around grabbing our moment,’’ Hughes said.

Bonbeach champion Shane McDonald lit the fuse, firing off three goals in the first term, while Mitch Gent slotted two.

McDonald finished with five for the game and was best-on-ground. Owen Hulett, Lachlan Gill-Renouf and Gent kicked three apiece.

Dylan Jones was one of the Sharks’ best players.

Ruckman Dylan Jones, skipper Jackson Casey and Gary Carpenter were also named in the best players.

Carpenter was “brilliant’’, according to Hughes.

“I think I’ve coached seven finals at Bonbeach and I’ve never seen Gary play a bad one,’’ he said.

Bonbeach’s side included five under 19 players and one of them, Joel Shanahan, was given the big job on YCW forward Luke Paynter and held him to one goal.

For Frankston YCW, Luke Black, Angus Wright, Jake Lovett and Kyle Hutchison tried hard.

Bonbeach progresses to the first semi-final against reigning premier Pines at Chelsea on Sunday.

“We’ve got the reigning premiers and it’s a massive task but the one time we rolled them in five years was at Chelsea in the second final two years ago so hopefully history repeats itself,’’ Hughes said.
