Edithvale-Aspendale coach Kris Pendlebury has marvelled at the exploits of Mick Meehan and Brett Eddy, the opposing full forwards who put on a goalkicking masterclass on Saturday.

Meehan kicked seven goals, including the match winner with minutes to go as Edithvale-Aspendale edged Pearcedale by a point, 18.10 (118) to 18.9 (117), at Regents Park.

Up the other end, former Port Adelaide AFL player Eddy fired off 10 goals in Pearcedale’s gallant losing bid.

“It was like an old fashioned 1990s shoot out to be honest,” Pendlebury said.

“It was quite entertaining to watch — obviously from the sidelines, I didn’t play — it was a really high standard of footy, really strong midfields going at it and obviously really dangerous forwards up either end.

“I think it was the best game certainly I’ve been involved in from a spectating point of view in a long time.

“But it was great to come away with the result in the end.”

Pendlebury said Meehan, who has kicked 34 goals this season, was a crucial part of Edi-Asp’s rise this season.

The Eagles have won 13 games in a row to open up a two-game buffer on top of the MPFNL Division 2 ladder.

“He’s such a smart player as well,” Pendlebury said of Meehan.

“He’s just reliable. You know what you’re going to get every week, he’s got amazing hands for someone, no disrespect, who’s not that athletic. He’s just really smart and obviously a great kick for goal. He was huge for us especially in the last quarter.”

Eddy has been the recruit of the season, kicking 57 goals in 14 games to lead the goal-kicking chart this season.

“I played on him a lot at my previous club when he was at Vermont and I told the boys he is an amazing player, if not the best forward in local footy,” Pendlebury said.

“And he put on a show yesterday. I don’t think it would have mattered who was going to be on him, he was in the zone. He’s an amazing player.”

Pearcedale was on the verge of a boilover victory when it led Edi-Asp by 19 points with four minutes to go.

But Edi-Asp found something, with Tyrone Vickery and Meehan slotting critical goals as the Eagles flew home.

Pearcedale coach Peter Bastinac said he was shattered after the game.

“I was just disappointed for the boys really,” he said.

“I thought it was a game we should have won…we should have held on.”

Kurt Lo Po, Liam Hiscock, Charlie Martello and ruckman Alexander Browne were also instrumental in Edi-Asp’s victory.

For Pearcedale, which is in a battle to hold onto fifth spot, Ryan Bastinac, Tom Schneider, Huw Jones and Luke Settineri were best behind Eddy.

Pendlebury said there was no added expectations on Edi-Asp as its winning streak mounted.

“To be honest it will sound very cliched and boring but we are taking it week to week,’’ he said.

“Every week presents a different challenge…we literally worry only about training Tuesday and getting better, training Thursday and getting better and take it into the weekend.

“There’s actually been no mention of a streak. It’s process and then live with the results.”

Edithvale-Aspendale faces Bonbeach, Devon Meadows, Somerville and Karingal in the remaining four rounds.

Pearcedale hosts Somerville in a finals-deciding clash next weekend.
