A Mornington Peninsula football league match was abandoned after a player was knocked out and suffered a suspected broken collarbone on Saturday.

Karingal ruckman Reuben Hanson, 19, was injured in a tackle just before halftime in the MPFNL Division 2 game against Mornington at Alexandra Park.

The game was delayed for over an hour while an ambulance attended Hanson, who was eventually transported to Frankston hospital.

Umpires eventually called the game off. At the time, Mornington led Karingal 22-19.

Karingal coach Luke Forsyth said Hanson was making his senior debut.

“There was a ball up, he got his own crumb and got tackled – it was a fair tackle – but he was rammed into the ground on his neck and shoulder,’’ Forsyth said.

“He had a bit of blurred vision and a broken collarbone so the ambulance was reluctant to move him, so there was fair delay of about an hour and 10 minutes.

“They (the umpires) were keen to give us every chance to get back on. His wellbeing was the number one priority and I think both sides were alright with it in the end.’’

Forsyth said it was a waiting game for players and officials while Hanson was being attended to by ambulance staff.

“Everyone was waiting around, the umpires were on the phone to the league, no one really knew what the go was, and our boys were worried about Reuben’s wellbeing,’’ he said.

“It was a very unusual situation.

“They’ve taken him to hospital, he’s conscious now. He’s definitely got a broken collarbone. He’ll be in overnight.

“He was on debut and he would have been in our best half dozen at halftime for sure. He was playing ruck and he didn’t look out of place. Spewing for him. He’s a good kid.’’
