Ed Greene’s value to Rye this season was highlighted on Saturday.

The centre halfforward slotted four goals to spark the Demons’ best win in years as they upset Somerville by 16 points in MPFNL Division 2.

Greene, the younger brother of GWS Giants star Toby, joined Rye this season from Collegians in the VAFA.

“He’s been good most of the year really,’’ Rye coach Brendon Moore said.

“He’s an infectious bloke which is good, he’s fitted in really well, gets around the boys, he’s good value actually.”

Moore said Greene was a different player to his famous brother but shared the same match-winning capabilities.

“Ed plays more of a key position as opposed to Toby who is a bit more hybrid, can play forward and on ball,” he said.

“Ed’s a bit taller, probably about six three.”

Rye trailed Somerville by five points at half time but made its winning move in the third quarter, kicking four unanswered goals, to set up the 12.6 (78) to 8.14 (62) victory.

Billy Swayn, Justin Barnes, Peter Hampton and Brady Egan, who also kicked four goals, were also influential in the win.

It was Rye’s second win in six games.

“We’ve been pretty competitive in most of our games,” Moore said.

“We just need to finish them off.”

Moore said Rye was tracking in the right direction and had more depth this season.

“We’ve got some flexibility this year which is good,” he said.

“Our seconds have been going really well. And the 19s had a good win on Saturday.

“We need to beat some sides a little bit above us (on the ladder). That’s what we’ve got to start to do, just to show improvement and you can see improvement then.”

Meanwhile, Ben McLean was best-afield as Bonbeach powered away from Hastings to win 17.13 (115) to 7.6 (48). Jack Sullivan, Joseph Fisscher, Tom McKinley and Brayden Chapple (three goals) were also in the best for the Sharks, who are 4-2 and in fifth spot.

Pearcedale co-coach Brett Eddy slotted seven goals as the Dales stormed home to beat Crib Point 14.10 (94) to 11.8 (74). Luke Daniel, Huw Jones, Bailey Gent and Shane Davidson were also influential for the 5-1 Dales.

Anthony Beale fired off seven goals as Chelsea cruised to victory over Karingal, 18.15 (123) to 7.5 (47). The Seagulls put their foot down in the third quarter, scoring seven goals as Jack Wallace, Todd Gardiner, Jarrod Ardern and Zane Carter ran rampant.

Joel Hillis, Jack Wilson and Ryan Koo gave dominating performances as Devon Meadows pulled clear after half time to beat Seaford 9.16 (70) to 5.8 (38).

Frankston Bombers remained the only undefeated side in the competition after dispatching Tyabb 17.20 (122) to 5.5 (35). Matt Robinson kicked four goals, while Brody Smith and Tyson Barry slotted three apiece.
