New Crib Point coach Duane Annable has secured his first recruit.

Former Frankston Dolphins VFL ruckman Peder Whelan — who stands at 200cm — has signed with the Magpies for season 2024.

“This is huge news for the club to be able to secure an elite tap ruckman,” Crib Point said. “Peder is a super athlete, covers the ground well, has great hands and has a very high footy IQ.”

Whelan played in a senior premiership at Mornington in 2004 at the age of 18.

He also had stints with Frankston Bombers, Wangaratta Magpies and in the VFL with the Frankston Dolphins.

In more recent times he has been dominating for the Peninsula Raiders in Division 1 Metro Superules, but has made the commitment to step back into Saturday footy.

“Midfield coach Andrew Shannon and our emerging midfielders are licking their lips at the prospect of roving under big Ped, and to start driving us forward come match days,” the club said.

“We feel Peder will develop into a cult figure at Crib and within the MPFNL.”

Whelan’s grandfather, Marcus Whelan, won a Brownlow Medal, and his dad, Shane, played with Collingwood.

But there aren’t just footy stars in the Whelan family. Peder’s cousin is Australian actress and model Nicky Whelan.

Meanwhile, Crib Point has re-signed star Miles Shepherd.
