MPFNL 2024: Langwarrin and Rosebud open their winning accounts in Division 1

A rousing rev-up, a suspension and bags of goals were contained in Langwarrin and Rosebud’s first wins of the season in MPFNL Division 1 on Saturday.

A rev-up from Langwarrin’s leadership group at three-quarter time fired the Roos to a come-from-behind 22-point win over Mornington on Saturday.

Trailing by two points at the last change, Langy’s leaders Nick Hammill, Zach Andrewartha and Matt Peynenborg urged their young teammates to seize the moment.

“The leaders did take control,” Langwarrin co-coach, ex-AFL Swan Jarred Moore said.

“Hammill, Andrewartha and Peynenborg had a talk to the whole group and reminded them that they really had to grab these moments.”

Langwarrin stormed home, kicking five goals to one in the last quarter to win, 10.8 (68) to 6.10 (46) at Lloyd Park.

Peynenborg led by example with four goals in the last term, while Collingwood VFL player Chad Mulvogue, Haydn Golby, Mitch Cuthbert and Joel Bateman ran rampant.

Youngsters Brodie Carpenter and Brodie Tibballs also impressed and James Longley continued his strong form.

Moore pointed out Langwarrin had been “right in it until the last little bit’’ in three other games this season and the young Roos were on the right track.

“We have nine or 10 blokes under about 10 games,’’ he said.

“You hope it (the win) is not a flash in the pan and we keep that effort up for the whole year.

“We’ve been having some good chats about staying in the moment, not getting worried if the opposition get a bit of a run on, focusing on what we can control.

“We will maintain the effort, continue to learn from each week. The longer we play together the better we’re going to be for sure.’’

At Olympic Park, Rosebud led throughout to upset Pines, 12.12 (84) to 9.8 (62), in front of a stack of past players celebrating premiership reunions.

Twins Matt and Stephen Cumming were the best two players on the ground, while Cranbourne recruit Kirk Dickson kicked four goals.

While delighted with his side’s “first four quarter performance of the year”, Rosebud coach Danny Ades was frustrated that another of his players was suspended for an indiscretion.

Blake Kuipers accepted a one-game penalty for an incident in the third quarter.

“That’s our third (suspension) for the year,” Ades said.

“So we need to tighten up in the discipline area, definitely.

“I think we’re the only club to have anyone suspended. We’ve got three blokes who have done weeks already.

“That’s something I’ll need to address with the boys, we’ve got to tighten up regarding some discipline stuff on field.”

Rosebud regained five players and it made a big difference, with Dickson, vice captain Mitch Dempster and key defender Bart Wallace adding strength.

Ades said the Cumming brothers were “clearly the best players on the ground”.

Matt was playing his second game since returning from a broken hand.

Rosebud’s midfield group of Jake Carosella, Billy Hartung and Reid Nanscawen were also influential.

“I think in the last three weeks they have been probably the driving force behind us getting on the board,” Ades said.

Rosebud hosts Mt Eliza next weekend, while Langwarrin travels to Red Hill.
